The Geraldton Road District was an early form of local government area in the Mid West region of Western Australia. There are 137 local government areas of Western Australia (LGAs), which are areas, towns and districts in Western Australia that manage their own affairs to the extent permitted by the ''Local Government Act 1995''. The ''Local Government Act 1995'' also makes provision for regional local governments (referred to as "regional councils", established by two or more local governments for a particular purpose. Mid West (Western Australia)
The Mid West region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is a sparsely populated region extending from the west coast of Western Australia, about north and south of its administrative centre of Geraldton, Western Australia, Geraldton and inland to east of Wiluna, Western Australia, Wiluna in the Gibson Desert. The ''Geraldton Guardian'' was established at Geraldton, Western Australia on 1 October 1906 to serve the Victoria and Murchison Districts. It was launched on principles of liberal democracy, state rights, nationalism and British preference. History Founding The ''Geraldton Guardian'' was established by the proprietors, Constantine and Gardner, at the "Guardian Buildings", Marine Terrace, Geraldton, Western Australia. Edward Constantine, the senior partner of Constantine and Gardner was born in Cornwall, England but emigrated to South Australia with his parents at the age of three. The Shire of Murchison covers a large area of the Murchison sub-region of the central part of Western Australia, northeast of Geraldton. The shire and the older 'Murchison' region and goldfield are now part of the designated Mid West region. It is Australia's second least populated local government area and the only one without a town. Description The Shire of Murchison incorporates 29 pastoral stations and a population of 114. Most properties are operated by family units with their main income from cattle, meat sheep and wool, with some goats. The Shire of Mullewa was a local government area in the Mid West region of Western Australia, about east of the city of Geraldton and about north of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covered an area of , and its seat of government was the town of Mullewa. It amalgamated with the City of Geraldton-Greenough on 1 July 2011 to become part of the City of Greater Geraldton. History The Mullewa Road District was constituted on 11 August 1911, and on 1 July 1961, it became a shire under the ''Local Government Act 1960''. Amalgamation Throughout 2010 and 2011, negotiations were held between the City of Geraldton-Greenough and the Shire of Mullewa as to whether the two entities should merge. Greenough Road District
The Greenough Road District was an early form of local government area in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It was based in the town of Greenough. It was established on 24 January 1871, and was originally a much larger district, including much of the future Shire of Murchison and Shire of Mullewa areas. The Murchison Road District was separated from the Greenough district on 3 August 1875 and the Mullewa Road District was separated on 11 August 1911. The road board built a permanent one-room stone office in Gregory Road, Greenough in 1906; the building survives today and is heritage-listed. Politicians Patrick Stone, John Stephen Maley and Henry Maley were all associated with the board: J. S. Maley as chairman, Stone as a board member, and future state Country Party leader Henry Maley as board secretary.
