Grandview Island is an island on the Ohio River in Tyler County, West Virginia. Grandview Island lies between New Matamoras, Ohio and Friendly, West Virginia. The island takes its name from a small community to its southwest on the Ohio shore by the name of Grandview. Grandview Island is protected as part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Tyler County, West Virginia
Tyler County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,313. Its county seat is Middlebourne. The county was founded in 1814 and is named after John Tyler, Sr., father of President John Tyler. History The earliest white hunters (mainly of Scotch-Irish, English, and German descent) settled in what later became Tyler County in 1792 near the present town of Friendly. This area on the banks of the Ohio River was former Indian hunting grounds. Tyler County was officially formed from a portion of what was then Ohio County, Virginia, on December 6, 1814. The following year, Middlebourne (founded 1798) became the county seat. New Matamoras, Ohio
Matamoras, also known as New Matamoras, is a village in Washington County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 702 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Marietta micropolitan area. History The Matamoras vicinity was first settled in 1797 by James Riggs and his sons-in-law, Martin and Anthony Sheets, along with their families. Riggs and his family cleared the land and built three cabins in the area. Many of the first settlers were Revolutionary War veterans. Matamoras, named for the Battle of Matamoros in the Mexican–American War, was platted in 1846 by Stinson Burris and Henry Sheets. In 1861, Matamoras was incorporated and received its first post office that year. The U.S. Post Office changed the town's name to New Matamoras to avoid confusion with Metamora in Fulton County. Friendly, West Virginia
Friendly is a town in Tyler County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 100 at the 2020 census. History The town was likely named for Friend Cochrane Williamson, an early settler. Friendly was incorporated in 1898. It is the setting of the novel '' Shiloh''. The 1884 Heirloom tomato variety was said to be discovered by James Lyde Williamson growing in a pile of flood debris along the Ohio River near Friendly, after the Great Flood of 1884. In 1903 the Parkersburg and Ohio Valley Electric Railway began to build a major electric interurban railway between Wheeling and Parkersburg. It only opened five miles (8 km) between Sistersville and Friendly, and operated until 1918. Friendly was claimed to have been one of the smallest settlements in the US with a dedicated interurban service, since it only had 217 residents at the time. Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge
The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge (ORINWR) is a National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in non-contiguous sites consisting of islands along of the Ohio River, primarily (85% of acreage) in the U.S. state of West Virginia. There are also two islands upstream in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and a pair downstream in Lewis County, Kentucky. Going downstream, the refuge is currently located in parts of these counties: Beaver, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel, Tyler, Pleasants, Wood, Jackson, Mason, and Lewis. All counties are in West Virginia, with the exceptions in Pennsylvania and Kentucky mentioned above.
