Grand Theatre (Copenhagen)
The Grand Theatre ( Danish: ''Grand Teatret''), located in Mikkel Bryggers Gade (No. 9), a small side street off Strøget, is one of the oldest cinemas in Copenhagen, Denmark. The cinema is based in the rear side of the Palace Hotel complex on City Hall Square. The building was completed to an Art Deco design by Anton Rosen in 1910. It was listed in the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1993. History The cinema is located on the rear side of the block which also contains the Palace Hotel on City Hall Square, Copenhagen's most fashionable hotel at the time of its opening in 1910. The entire block was designed by the architect Anton Rosen. The first cinema at the site opened on 26 December 1913. It was known as Empire Theatre and based in Palace Hotel's Grand Hall which had originally been built as a concert hall accessed from Mikkel Bryggers Gade. Urban Gad
Peter Urban Bruun Gad (12 February 1879 – 26 December 1947) was a Danish film director, stage actor, screenwriter, and author. He directed 40 films between 1910 and 1927. His wife Asta Nielsen starred in 30 of his films, also in his début the film '' Afgrunden'' (''The Abyss'') from 1910. They moved to Germany in 1911 where Gad worked with Paul Davidson until 1922. His mother was the playwright Emma Gad. In 1873, the painter Paul Gauguin married his father's cousin, Mette-Sophie Gad. Between 1912 and 1918, Gad was married to actress Asta Nielsen. Walter Christmas
Walter Christmas-Dirckinck-Holmfeld (10 February 1861–18 March 1924), commonly known as Walter Christmas, was a Danish author, naval officer, diplomat, and spy for MI6. Today, he is best known for his children's books. He also wrote novels, nonfictional accounts, and theatrical works. Many of his early works were inspired by his experiences traveling as a naval officer. He began an extensive military career at the age of 14, serving in the Danish Navy, then later the Royal Thai Navy and the Greek Navy. While stationed in Siam he was involved in the Paknam incident wherein he disobeyed the orders of his commander, Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu. He was discharged as a result. Anton Rosen
Anton Rosen (13 September 1859 – 2 July 1928) was a Danish architect, furniture designer, decorative artist and professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In his architecture, he combined a free Historicist style with inspiration from contemporary English architecture and details influenced by Jugendstil. Biography Anton Rosen was born at Horsens in Jutland, Denmark. He was the son of Carl Julius Rose, master mason at the Royal Danish Theatre.
