Goscote, West Midlands
Goscote is a residential area of Walsall in the West Midlands of England. The Goscote name dates back several centuries and as recently as the 1920s it was a largely rural area that had survived the recent Industrial Revolution which dramatically altered the face of the region. Location Goscote forms part of the Blakenall ward of Walsall, which also includes Blakenall Heath, Harden and Coal Pool. History In the 1930s when Walsall council designated Goscote as the site of a new council housing development to rehouse families from town centre slums. By the outbreak of World War II in 1939, more than 400 families had been rehoused to new council housing in Goscote Lane, Goscote Lodge Crescent, Hildicks Crescent, Middle Crescent and Hildicks Place. Further new housing was developed by the council around Goscote after the war ended in 1945. Walsall
Walsall (, or ; locally ) is a market town and administrative centre in the West Midlands (county), West Midlands County, England. Historic counties of England, Historically part of Staffordshire, it is located north-west of Birmingham, east of Wolverhampton and from Lichfield. Harden, West Midlands
Harden is an area to the north of Walsall and borders with Bloxwich, Blakenall Heath, Coalpool, Goscote and Rushall. The whole area was part of the industrial revolution, with mining and metal processing being the main industries. Although close to the A34 main road from the Stoke (potteries) to Birmingham, it is still served by canals. The area mostly developed with council housing from the 1930s, though some of the older properties have been gradually demolished since the early 1990s. A large area has been left as park land for community use. Crime and poverty Harden is one of the most deprived parts of the Walsall borough and also has one of the highest crime rates, although it has improved since the turn of the 21st century due to a regeneration of the worst parts of the area. Coal Pool
Coal Pool is a housing estate in Walsall, West Midlands, England. Most of the homes in area were built by the local council during the 1930s, with a smaller development taking place in the late 1940s which marked the resumption of council house building in the borough after World War II. During World War II, an air raid on a house in Beddows Road on 14 November 1940 resulted in a 19-year-old Blakenall Heath man being seriously injured; he died in Walsall Manor Hospital shortly afterwards. This was the only civilian fatality during the Second World War. Coal Pool is part of the Blakenall ward of Walsall, which also includes Blakenall Heath, Harden and Goscote, and has had some of the highest poverty and crime rates in the borough of Walsall.
