Good Rocking Tonight (album)
''Good Rocking Tonight'' is a compilation album by the blues musician Roy Brown. Released by Route 66 Records in 1978 in mono as KIX-6, and is a follow-up to an earlier release titled ''Laughing But Crying'' (KIX-2). This album's subtitle is "Legendary Recordings, Vol 2 (1947–1954)". The cover features a portrait of Roy Brown, courtesy of Roy Brown, taken in 1950. Some reviewers state that Brown's version of " Good Rocking Tonight" released in 1947, or Wynonie Harris' version from 1948, (depending on the source), is one of the contenders for the title of " first rock and roll recording". The label of the 45 RPM record by Brown included the words "Rocking blues". Roy James Brown (September 10, 1920 or 1925May 25, 1981) was an American blues singer who had a significant influence on the early development of rock and roll and the direction of R&B. His original song and hit recording " Good Rockin' Tonight" has been covered by many artists including Wynonie Harris, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Joe Ely, Ricky Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Pat Boone, James Brown, the Doors, and the rock group Montrose. Brown was one of the first popular R&B singers to perform songs with a gospel-steeped delivery, which was then considered taboo by many churches. In addition, his melismatic, pleading vocal style influenced notable artists such as B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Elvis Presley, Jackie Wilson, James Brown and Little Richard. Jonas Bernholm
Jonas Olof Erik Bernholm (born November 26, 1946) is a Swedish record producer. He has been active in the publishing of gramophone records and research of classical American blues, soul, gospel and rhythm & blues music. The Jonas Bernholm Rhythm & Blues Collection can be found at Smithsonian Institution. Career During Bernholm's first trip to the United States in 1968, Bernholm came in direct contact with many artists and producers in soul, blues and rhythm & blues. He documented, interviewed, listened and was living this world of music. Back in Sweden, he created with his two friends, Bengt Weine and Per Slim Notini, a record label, Route 66 Records. Melvin Lastie
Melvin Clarke Lastie, Sr. (November 18, 1930 – December 4, 1972) was an American R&B trumpeter, flugelhornist, and cornetist. He also played jazz and was a session musician on many soul and rock records of the 1960s. Lastie was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Frank and Alice Hill Lastie. Melvin's four brothers were Chester, David, Joseph, and Walter, and his sister was Betty Ann. Lastie played with Paul Barbarin and Fats Domino while he was still a teenager. He served in the military during the Korean War, then formed a group with his brother David Lastie, which backed Big Joe Turner on tour throughout North America. He worked as a studio musician in the 1950s, including on recordings by Roy Brown, and played in a band led by Clarence Samuels alongside Ornette Coleman. Ike Isaacs (bassist)
Charles "Ike" Isaacs (March 28, 1923 – February 27, 1981) was an American jazz bassist from Greater Cleveland. Early life Born in Akron, Ohio, Isaacs played trumpet and tuba as a child before settling on bass. Career Isaacs served in the Army during World War II, where he took lessons from Wendell Marshall. Following this he played with Tiny Grimes (1948–50), Earl Bostic (1951–53), Paul Quinichette (1953), and Bennie Green (1956). He led a band locally in Ohio in 1956, then played for two years in the trio of Carmen McRae, whom he married late in the decade. He worked with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, then with Count Basie (1962), Gloria Lynne (1962–64), and Erroll Garner (1966–70), as well as with his own small groups. He recorded only once as a leader, in 1967 for RGB Records. On this recording he plays in a trio with Jack Wilson on piano and Jimmie Smith on drums. Wallace Davenport
Wallace Foster Davenport (30 June 1925 – 18 March 2004) was an American jazz trumpeter. Davenport has been one of the few traditional jazz musicians of the 1930s who later branched out into swing and bop styles, as well as backing gospel and R&B vocalists during an extensive career in eight different decades. Davenport was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He started on trumpet at age 13 with The Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He played with Papa Celestin in 1941 before leaving New Orleans to serve in the U. S. Navy. Davenport returned there after World War II, making an easy transition to swing and bop with various bands. He recorded with Roy Brown in 1947. During the 1950s he toured the US and Europe playing with Lionel Hampton, and recorded in Paris in the mid-'50 with Mezz Mezzrow. Blues is a music genre and musical form which originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads from the African-American culture.
