This is a general glossary of the terms used in the sport of gymnastics. A ;AA: Abbreviation for all-around. ;AB: A scoring abbreviation for uneven bars, from the name asymmetric bars. ;A-score: Under the current ''Code of Points,'' this score tallies the gymnast' counted skills, combinations and EGR. In theory, the A-score can be open-ended, depending on the skills the gymnast presents. ;Acrobatic gymnastics: A discipline of gymnastics where partners work together to combine the tumbling and power of the floor exercise in artistic gymnastics with the flexibility and artistry of dance. Acrobatic gymnastics routines are performed on the floor apparatus. ;: A term in which a singular athlete competes (and scored in) on all four (women) or six (men) apparatus in a single continuous meet. Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a type of sport that includes physical exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, dedication and endurance. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups. Gymnastics evolved from exercises used by the ancient Greeks that included skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and from circus performance skills. The most common form of competitive gymnastics is artistic gymnastics (AG), which consists of, for women (WAG), the events floor, vault, uneven bars, and beam; and for men (MAG), the events floor, vault, rings, pommel horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar. The governing body for gymnastics throughout the world is the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). Banned Gymnastics Skills
Banned gymnastic skills are gymnastics moves which are prohibited to perform, mostly due to safety concerns for the performing athletes. Artistic gymnastics Women Official regulation from the International Gymnastics Federation states in its Code of Points for Women, Section 14 Table of elements: Following elements are prohibited for performance: * VT – vaults with sideward take-off or landing. * UB – salto & DMT with take-off from two feet. * BB – dance elements with cross sit landing on BB. * FX – acro elements with sideward take off and/or landing into roll. Handstand
__NOTOC__ A handstand is the act of supporting the body in a stable, inverted vertical position by balancing on the hands. In a basic handstand, the body is held straight with arms and legs fully extended, with hands spaced approximately shoulder-width apart and the legs together. There are many variations of handstands, all of which require the performer to possess adequate balance and upper body strength. Kinematics Handstands use the wrist flexor muscles as well as the anterior deltoid, pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, biceps brachii, and trapezius descendens. It is considered demanding in terms of both the muscle and joint requirement. According to a 2017 study most handbalancers use wrist movement to maintain balance in a handstand. Georgia-Mae Fenton
Georgia-Mae Fenton (born 2 November 2000) is an elite English artistic gymnast and a member of both the British national gymnastics team and the England Commonwealth Games gymnastics squad. She is the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth champion on uneven bars, and a member of the gold-medal winning England team in 2022. With Great Britain, she was part of the team that won silver at both the 2022 European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships and 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Domestically, Fenton is a four-time English champion and a two-time British champion. Early life Fenton was inspired to start gymnastics after watching Beth Tweddle compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She also trained in ballet at a young age. Nina Derwael
Nina Derwael ( or ; born 26 March 2000) is a Belgian artistic gymnast. She is the 2020 Olympic champion, a two-time World champion (2018, 2019), and a two-time European champion (2017, 2018) on the uneven bars. She is the 2019 European Games champion on the balance beam, as well as a two-time Belgian national all-around champion (2015, 2018). She represented Belgium at the 2016 Summer Olympics and at the 2020 Olympics. At the 2020 Olympics, she led the Belgian gymnastics team to their first-ever team final where they finished eighth. She qualified for the all-around final where she finished sixth, and she won the gold medal in the uneven bars final, the first Olympic medal of any color for a Belgian female gymnast. The ''Code of Points'' is a rulebook that defines the scoring system for each level of competition in gymnastics. There is not a universal international ''Code of Points'', and every oversight organization — such as the FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique), NCAA Gymnastics, and most national gymnastics federations — designs and employs its own unique ''Code of Points''. The FIG Code of Points The FIG Code of Points is defined in a public document provided by the Federation. Pommel Horse
The pommel horse is an artistic gymnastics apparatus. Traditionally, it is used by only male gymnasts. Originally made of a metal frame with a wooden body and a leather cover, the modern pommel horse has a metal body covered with foam rubber and leather, with plastic handles (or pommels). Apparatus History The apparatus originates from the Romans, who used wooden horses to teach mounting and dismounting. They later added it to the ancient Olympic Games. The basic modern exercises were developed in the early 19th century by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, founder of the German Turnverein. Magnesium Carbonate
Magnesium carbonate, (archaic name magnesia alba), is an inorganic salt that is a colourless or white solid. Several hydrated and basic forms of magnesium carbonate also exist as minerals. Forms The most common magnesium carbonate forms are the anhydrous salt called magnesite (), and the di, tri, and pentahydrates known as barringtonite (), nesquehonite (), and lansfordite (), respectively. Some basic forms such as artinite (), hydromagnesite (), and dypingite () also occur as minerals. All of those minerals are colouress or white. Magnesite consists of colourless or white trigonal crystals. The anhydrous salt is practically insoluble in water, acetone, and ammonia. All forms of magnesium carbonate react with acids. Cartwheel (gymnastics)
A cartwheel is a sideways rotary movement of the body. It is performed by bringing the hands to the floor one at a time while the body inverts. The legs travel over the body trunk while one or both hands are on the floor, and then the feet return to the floor one at a time, ending with the athlete standing upright. It is performed in a variety of athletic activities, including performance dance and some types of Indian dance, in gymnastics and cheer, and in the martial arts of capoeira. It is called a ''cartwheel'' because the performer's arms and legs move in a fashion similar to the spokes of a turning ( cart) wheel.
