Glandyfi
Glandyfi (formerly anglicised as Glandovey) is a small hamlet in the county of Ceredigion in Wales on the A487 trunk road from Machynlleth to Aberystwyth . Glandyfi Castle was built in the Regency Gothic style in 1810 for George Jeffreys. The Jeffreys family remained in possession of the castle until 1906, when the estate was broken up and sold at auction. The castle itself was bought by Robert John Spurrell (elder son of Daniel Spurrell of Bessingham, Norfolk), who remained there until his death in 1929. It was later the home of Sir Bernard and Lady Docker, and until September 2019, operated as a bed and breakfast. Glandyfi Castle has been a Grade II listed building since 1964 as "the only castellated country house in the county". As of April 2020, the castle was again on the market. Glandyfi Castle
Glandyfi Castle in Glandyfi, Ceredigion, Wales, is a mock castle dating from the early 19th century. It was built for George Jeffreys, a barrister and High Sheriff of Cardiganshire, in around 1819. Jeffreys’ great-uncle, Edward, had purchased the estate in 1792. The architect is not known, although John Hiram Haycock has been suggested. Jeffreys and his wife were friends of Thomas Love Peacock, the novelist and poet, whose wedding took place at the castle in 1820. The only castellated country house in the county, Glandyfi is a Grade II listed building. History The Jeffreys were originally from Shrewsbury and had moved to Ceredigion (then Cardiganshire) in the mid-18th century to develop lead smelting mills. Edward Jeffreys bought the Ynyshir estate, which included the site of the present castle, in 1792. Aberdyfi Castle is a castle located near Glandyfi, Ceredigion, in Wales. All that now remains is the motte, which is referred to as ''Domen Las'' (traditionally meaning "blue mound" in Welsh). History Aberdyfi Castle was founded by the Lord Rhys, Rhys ap Gruffydd in 1156, shortly after he had become ruler of Deheubarth. Rhys had heard rumours that Owain Gwynedd was planning to invade Ceredigion in order to reclaim it for Gwynedd. Rhys responded by building a castle at Aberdyfi. Norah Royce Docker, Lady Docker (; 23 June 190611 December 1983) was an English socialite. A dance hostess at a club in her youth, she married three times, on each occasion to an executive of a business that sold luxury goods. Her third marriage, to Sir Bernard Docker, the chairman of Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) and its subsidiary, Daimler, was notable for the couple's extravagant lifestyle. Bernard Docker
Sir Bernard Dudley Frank Docker (9 August 1896 – 22 May 1978) was an English industrialist. Born in Edgbaston, Birmingham, he was the only child of Frank Dudley Docker, an English businessman and financier. Career Docker was the managing director of the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) group of companies from the early 1940s until 1956. Borth Railway Station
Borth railway station is a railway station on the Cambrian Line in mid-Wales, serving the village of Borth near Aberystwyth. History The station was opened by the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway on 1 July 1863 when it opened the section of line between and Borth. It originally had two platforms with a goods yard to the north, but is now an unmanned halt. The station was host to a GWR camp coach from 1934 to 1939. A camping coach was also positioned here by the Western Region from 1952 to 1962. Cambrian Railways
The Cambrian Railways owned of track over a large area of mid Wales. The system was an amalgamation of a number of railways that were incorporated in 1864, 1865 and 1904. The Cambrian connected with two larger railways with connections to the northwest of England via the London and North Western Railway, and the Great Western Railway for connections between London and Wales.
