Gerda Krüger-Nieland
Gerda Krüger-Nieland (June 22, 1910, in Bremen – September 21, 2000, in Karlsruhe) was a German lawyer and first senate president at the Federal Court of Justice. Because of some restrictions, she was not allowed to work as a judge or a lawyerGesetz über die Zulassung der Frauen zu den Ämtern und Berufen der Rechtspflege vom 11. Juli 1922, RGBl. I S. 573/ref> and in 1945, fled to Hamburg and worked there as a lawyer and mainly as a defense lawyer. Although she had never worked as a judge before, she became a judge in 1951 at the newly established Federal Court of Justice. In 1965, she was appointed as the first woman to the Senate President of the I. Bremen (Low German also: ''Breem'' or ''Bräm''), officially the City Municipality of Bremen (german: Stadtgemeinde Bremen, ), is the capital of the German state Free Hanseatic City of Bremen (''Freie Hansestadt Bremen''), a two-city-state consisting of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The Federal Court of Justice (german: Bundesgerichtshof, BGH) is the highest court in the system of ordinary jurisdiction (''ordentliche Gerichtsbarkeit'') in Germany, founded in 1950. It has its seat in Karlsruhe with two panels being situated in Leipzig since 1997 and 2020, respectively. It is the supreme court (court of last resort) in all matters of criminal law and private law.
