George-Emile Eberhard
Georges Eberhard (1865–1926) was a Swiss watchmaker and industrialist who founded Eberhard & Co. Biography Early life Georges-Lucien Eberhard was born in 1865 in Saint-Imier, the son of a prominent Bernese family tracing its origins back to the 10th century. The Eberhard family had been instrumental in the early development of the Swiss watchmaking industry. Georges's father initiated him to the art of watch making. Eberhard was only 22 when he moved to La Chaux-de-Fonds, the historic birthplace of the watch-making industry, where he founded its own factory, Eberhard & Co. Eberhard & Co Eberhard's watch-making genius and sense of business turned his factory into one of the largest Swiss watch manufacturers by 1909. A watchmaker is an artisan who makes and repairs watches. Since a majority of watches are now factory-made, most modern watchmakers only repair watches. However, originally they were master craftsmen who built watches, including all their parts, by hand. Modern watchmakers, when required to repair older watches, for which replacement parts may not be available, must have fabrication skills, and can typically manufacture replacements for many of the parts found in a watch. The term clockmaker refers to an equivalent occupation specializing in clocks. Most practising professional watchmakers service current or recent production watches. Paul Ditisheim (1868–1945) was a Swiss people, Swiss watchmaker, inventor and industrialist. Early years Paul Ditisheim was born into a wealthy family in 1868 in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The Ditisheims belonged to a small social circle of industrialist families that were at the forefront of the Swiss watch industry at the time. His father, Gaspard, and uncle, Maurice Ditisheim (or Ditesheim), were the founders of the established watch company Vulcain, which was one of the many watch companies started by Jews, Jewish families in the region. Vulcain is a Swiss luxury watchmaker based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. It was founded in 1858 by Maurice Ditisheim as ''Manufacture Ditisheim' in La Chaux-de-Fonds,'' being rebranded as Vulcain in 1894. Paul Bernard Vogel was a Swiss industrialist who owned the Solvil et Titus watch manufacture. Business life In 1930, Vogel acquired the '' Solvil et Titus'' and ''Paul Ditisheim'' brands from their founder Paul Ditisheim. Vogel moved the company's headquarters to Geneva where he became the chairman of the ''Salon Montres et Bijoux'' (the '' Watch and Jewelry's Fair''), the most prestigious association of Swiss watch manufacturers and jewelers of the time.
