The Gate of Elvira (Spanish: ''Puerta de Elvira'') is an arch located in Granada, Spain. It was declared ''Bien de Interés Cultural'' in 1896. It is located at the beginning of ''Calle Elvira'' (Elvira Street), on the edge of the Albaicín neighbourhood. The gate was formerly known as ''Bāb Ilbīra'' in Arabic. It was originally part of the 11th-century Zirid The Zirid dynasty ( ar, الزيريون, translit=az-zīriyyūn), Banu Ziri ( ar, بنو زيري, translit=banū zīrī), or the Zirid state ( ar, الدولة الزيرية, translit=ad-dawla az-zīriyya) was a Sanhaja Berber dynasty from m ... walls, but in the 14th century it was rebuilt into a heavily-fortified structure in order to be incorporated into the new Nasrid extension of the walls. The Albaicín (), also known as Albayzín (from ar, ٱلْبَيّازِينْ, translit=al-Bayyāzīn), is a district of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. It is centered around a hill on the north side of the Darro River which passes through the city. The neighbourhood is notable for its historic monuments and for largely retaining its medieval street plan dating back to the Nasrid period (13th to 15th centuries), although it nonetheless went through many physical and demographic changes after the end of the ''Reconquista'' in 1492.
