Gass Peak
Gass Peak is the highest peak in the Las Vegas Range of Southern Nevada with a summit of 6,937 feet (2,114 m). It is easily seen to the north of the Las Vegas Valley, bordering the city of North Las Vegas. The peak is located about 20 miles (32 km) north of Las Vegas and is within the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. A communications tower with solar panels has been built at the top of the peak. Etymology Gass Peak is named for Octavius Decatur Gass (1828–1924), an early settler and prominent rancher of Las Vegas. History On November 26, 2019, a Cirrus SR22 crashed into the summit of Gass Peak, and all three passengers aboard the plane were killed. The Cirrus SR22 is a single-engine four- or five-seat composite aircraft built from 2001 by Cirrus Aircraft of Duluth, Minnesota. It is a development of the Cirrus SR20, with a larger wing, higher fuel capacity, and a more powerful, 310-horsepower (231 kW) engine. Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument
Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, a United States National Monument near Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada, was established in 2014 to protect Ice Age paleontological discoveries. Mormon Well Spring
Mormon Well Spring is located in the Desert National Wildlife Range and was used from around 1900–1924 for ranching. It is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. Octavius Decatur Gass
Octavius Decatur "O. D." Gass (February 29, 1828 – December 10, 1924) was an American prospector, businessman, and politician. A four term member of the Arizona Territorial Legislature, he was active in the early history of Las Vegas, Nevada and the creation of Pah-Ute County, Arizona Territory. Early life Gass was born to John and Ann (McCleur) Gass near Mansfield in Richland County, Ohio on February 29, 1828. He was educated in public schools. Tradition holds he attended Oberlin College but there are no school records confirming this claim. His education did however provide him with a basic knowledge of Spanish and civil engineering. At the start of the California Gold Rush, Gass took a ship from Baltimore, Maryland to California by way of Cape Horn, arriving in January 1850.
