Garswood is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of St. Helens, Merseyside, England. The village is within the civil parish of Seneley Green. The parish was historically part of Ashton-in-Makerfield until 1974 boundary changes. History Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Garswood is from Old English gyr “fir” and ''wudu'' "wood", the fir wood. The name was recorded as ''Gratiswode'' (undated). Along with extensive farming, Garswood has seen much coal mining activity in its past, due to strata running up to an adjacent fault causing much outcropping of coal seams. Local mines included Garswood Park (which operated 1868–1880), Seneley Green (1869-1880), Birchenheds (1880-1925) and Park (1869-1960). Mining has taken place using (comparatively) shallow shafts and many drifts. The last drift mine in the Garswood area (in neighbouring Golborne), Quaker House Colliery, closed in 1992. Garswood Railway Station
Garswood railway station serves the village of Garswood in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, Merseyside, England. It is situated on the electrified Merseytravel Liverpool to Wigan City Line, northeast of Liverpool Lime Street. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Northern Trains, however the station is branded Merseyrail using Merseyrail ticketing. History The station was opened on 1 December 1869 by the Lancashire Union Railway on their route between St Helens and . It later became part of the London and North Western Railway, with through running to Liverpool via Huyton commencing in 1871. Passenger services over the Wigan to and Blackburn section ended in January 1960. Facilities The station has a ticket office on the northbound platform (1) and a waiting room on platform 2. Mid-Cheshire League
The Cheshire Association Football League is a football competition based in Cheshire, England, which until 2007 was known as the Mid-Cheshire Association Football League. From season 2017–18, the league operates four divisions: the Premier Division, Divisions One and Two, and a Reserve Division. Founded in 1948, only one club (Knutsford) have maintained continuous membership since the formation of the league. St Helens Central Railway Station
St Helens Central railway station (previously known as St. Helens Shaw Street) is a railway station serving the town of St Helens, Merseyside, England. It is on the Liverpool to Wigan Line from Liverpool Lime Street to Wigan North Western. The station and all trains calling at it are operated by Transpennine Express or Northern Trains. The station is on the Merseyrail City Line. The City Line is the name given to local rail routes out of Liverpool Lime Street operated by companies other than Merseyrail. The City Line appears on maps of the Merseyrail network as red, and covers the Liverpool-Wigan Line. Although it is branded under the Merseyrail name, the routes are operated by Northern Trains on behalf of Merseytravel rather than by the Merseyrail franchise. Paul Loughlin
Paul John Loughlin (born 28 July 1966) is an English former rugby league who played for his hometown team St. Helens, the Bradford Bulls, the Huddersfield Giants and the Swinton Lions. Loughlin was born in St. Helens, Lancashire, England. He made his first team début for St. Helens against Oldham aged 17 in 1984. He went on to score over 2,000 points for the club, and holds the club record for most points scored in a game - 2 tries and 16 goals for a total of 40 points in a 112–0 victory over Carlisle during September 1986. In 1995, he was transferred to the Bradford Bulls as part of the record breaking deal to bring Paul Newlove to Knowsley Road. Loughlin was also a regular selection for Great Britain. He was selected to go on the 1988 Great Britain Lions tour. Liverpool Lime Street Railway Station
Liverpool Lime Street is a terminus railway station and the main station serving the city centre of Liverpool. Opened in August 1836, it is the oldest still-operating grand terminus mainline station in the world. A branch of the West Coast Main Line from London Euston terminates at the station, as does the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Journeys from Lime Street cover a wide range of destinations across England, Scotland and Wales. Having realised that their existing Crown Street railway station was too far away from the city centre, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway commenced construction of the more central Lime Street station in October 1833. The Local Government Act 1972 (c. 70) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that reformed local government in England and Wales on 1 April 1974. It was one of the most significant Acts of Parliament to be passed by the Heath Government of 1970–74.
