Gander Flyers
The Gander Flyers (also commonly known as the Kelly Ford Gander Flyers due to a sponsorship deal that began October 3, 2014) were a senior ice hockey team based in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of in the Central West Senior Hockey League. History The Gander Flyers hockey club has its roots in picked teams from the Royal Canadian Air Force hockey league at RCAF Station Gander during the Second World War and from the Gander Hockey League picked team that entered Newfoundland inter-town senior hockey competition in 1947. The RCAF 'Bombers' and 'Fliers' played exhibition games at other Newfoundland hockey centres during World War II including Corner Brook and Grand Falls. Gander first joined the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association, and the race for the Herder Memorial Trophy, in 1947 as part of the Central Division with teams from Bishop's Falls, Buchans and Grand Falls. Gander, Newfoundland And Labrador
Gander is a town located in the northeastern part of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, approximately south of Gander Bay, south of Twillingate and east of Grand Falls-Windsor. Evening Telegram Trophy
The Evening Telegram Trophy is presented to the team with the best record in the senior A hockey leagues operating in Newfoundland and Labrador. History The owners of the Evening Telegram newspaper originally donated a trophy in 1954 to be presented annually to the champions of the new senior section 'B' division of the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association. The section B league was formed for teams with no 'import' or paid players on their roster. The B Division was disbanded after the 1959 Championships and the Evening Telegram Trophy was retired. The trophy was not awarded in 1960 & 1961. In 1962, the Trophy was awarded to the winner of the senior league's new Eastern Division. (The S.E. Wayne Maxner
Wayne Douglas Maxner (born September 27, 1942 in Halifax, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian former hockey player for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). He led the Ontario Hockey Association junior A league in scoring in 1962–63 as a member of the Niagara Falls Flyers and won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as league MVP. He played 54 games for the Bruins in 1964–65, and eight more the following season. He bounced around the American, Western and Eastern Hockey Leagues until retiring in 1973. In 62 NHL games, Maxner scored eight goals and nine assists. His first NHL goal occurred on December 5, 1964 in Boston's 3-3 tie versus the New York Rangers at Boston Garden. He recorded 48 penalties in minutes. Following his retirement as a player, Maxner served as the head coach of several teams, primarily the Windsor Spitfires and London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Wes Trainor
Thomas Weston "Bucko" Trainor (September 11, 1922 – November 21, 1991) was a Canadian ice hockey player. He played 17 games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers during the 1948–49 season. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1940 to 1956, was spent in the minor and senior leagues. Biography After playing with the Canadian Army in the United Kingdom during the Second World War, Wes "Bucko" Trainor was a hockey player in the Maritimes and Newfoundland through the late 1940s and 1950s. The Thunder Bay Twins were an Amateur Senior and Professional ice hockey team from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The Twins won five Allan Cups as National Senior Champions from 1970 until 1991. Origin On 1 January 1970, the City of Thunder Bay was formed through the merger of the neighbouring cities of Fort William and Port Arthur, along with portions of smaller townships. Fort William and Port Arthur had a long history of teams competing in Senior "A" hockey, dating back to at least the Port Arthur Bearcats's loss in a 1911 challenge for the Stanley Cup. The Cambridge Hornets were a Senior "AAA" ice hockey team based out of Cambridge, Ontario. They played in the Ontario Hockey Association's Major League Hockey. The new Cambridge Hornets were brought into Southwestern Senior A Hockey League in 1999. They were members of the league in 2003 when it changed its name to Major League Hockey. The Clarenville Caribous (also commonly known as the Clarenville Ford Caribous due to an ongoing sponsorship deal announced September 23, 2015) are a senior ice hockey team based in Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of the Central West Senior Hockey League. The Caribous are three-time winners of the Herder Memorial Trophy as all-Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey Champions and winners of the 2011 Allan Cup as National Senior "AAA" Hockey Champions. History The Caribous broke into the WCSHL in 2006-2007, ending the season in last place with 18 points. However, in the very next season in 2007-2008 they shot past the other three teams, ending the season in first place with 30 points. Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts
The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts are a senior ice hockey team based in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of the Central Division of the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League. Since it was founded in 1966, the Cataracts hockey club has been awarded the Herder Memorial Trophy eight times as all-Newfoundland senior hockey champions, including three consecutive championships from 2014 to 2016. The Cataracts were awarded the Evening Telegram Trophy on four occasions for finishing first overall in the NSHL regular season. The Cataracts won the Allan Cup in 2017 in Bouctouche, NB.
