Gärdehov is an indoor arena located in Sundsvall, Sweden, and built in 1966. The ice hockey arena has a capacity of 2,500 spectators (previously 3,300) since the renovation of the arena in summer 2009, and is IF Sundsvall Hockey's home arena. IF Sundsvall Hockey is a Swedish ice hockey club based in Sundsvall. The club currently competes in Hockeyettan, the third tier of ice hockey in Sweden. Sundsvall plays their home matches at Gärdehov, with a capacity of 2,500. History The club was founded in 1896 as Tunadals Skid och Skridskoförening (''Tundal Ski and Skate Club''), which was active mainly in ice skating, but also participated in athletics, association football, and orienteering. Participation in ice hockey wouldn't begin until 1952. In 1976, the club was reorganized as Sundsvall/Tunadals IF, which was later given its current name of IF Sundsvall Hockey in 1985. Selånger SK Bandy is a bandy club in Sundsvall, Sweden, and part of the sports club alliance Selånger SK. It has its name from the small village of Selånger outside Sundsvall proper. Selånger SK was founded in 1921 and has had many sports under its umbrella, of which bandy has been one of the most successful. The men's bandy team has played 26 seasons in the Swedish top division and was runner-up for the Swedish Championship in 1981. A bandy field or bandy rink is a large ice rink used for playing the team winter sport of bandy. Being about the size of a football pitch, it is substantially larger than an ice hockey rink. History Originally, bandy was played on naturally frozen ice, mainly on lakes. Teams often had to take time to go out and search for the best ice to use. Soon, ice started to be created on soccer pitches in the wintertime, allowing for a more safe place to play. This may be the reason the outer measurements are the same as for a soccer field.
