National Olympic Committee
A National Olympic Committee (NOC) is a national constituent of the worldwide Olympic movement. Subject to the controls of the International Olympic Committee, NOCs are responsible for organizing their people's participation in the Olympic Games. They may nominate cities within their respective areas as candidates for future Olympic Games. NOCs also promote the development of athletes and the training of coaches and officials at a national level within their geographies. National Olympic Committees As of 2020, there are 206 National Olympic Committees. Guyana ( or ), officially the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, is a country on the northern mainland of South America. Guyana is an indigenous word which means "Land of Many Waters". The capital city is Georgetown. Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Venezuela to the west, and Suriname to the east. Guyana At The Olympics
Guyana has competed in 16 Games of the Olympiads. They have never competed in the Olympic Winter Games. For the first 5 games they appeared as British Guiana. The country has won a single medal, a bronze in boxing won by Michael Anthony (boxer), Michael Anthony at the 1980 Summer Olympics. The Guyana Olympic Association was created in 1935 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1948. Guyana At The Commonwealth Games
Guyana has competed in seventeen of the twenty previous Commonwealth Games. British Guiana was one of the eleven countries to compete in the first Games in 1930, and participated under that name until 1962. The country gained independence in 1966 as Guyana, and subsequently competed under that name. Overall medal tally At the 1930 British Empire Games, British Guiana won two medals. A silver medal was won by Colin Gordon in the high jump and a bronze medal was won in the coxed four event in rowing. In the 1934 British Empire Games, a gold medal was won by Phil Edwards in the 880 yards. Edwards competed for Canada at several Olympic Games. A Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) is a national sports council of the Commonwealth Sports movement. Each association is responsible for organising, supporting and overseeing their national team for both the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games. The associations are subject to the rules of, and report to, the Commonwealth Games Federation. As well as promoting sports nationally, an association can also place a Bids for Commonwealth Games, bid for the Commonwealth Games for a potential host city.
