The Gustaf Adolf märket is, after the Silvervargen ( Silver Wolf), the highest award in Scouterna (the Swedish Scout movement). It has been awarded by Swedish Scouting since 1947. Background The Gustaf Adolf märket was created in 1947 in memory of Prince Gustaf Adolf, the prince was heavily involved in the scout movement and from 1930 to his death 1947 chairman of the Swedish Scout Union. Today, the award is awarded to "active leaders for particularly meritorious contributions to the Swedish Scout movement at least at district level. The principles for the medal were in 1947 drawn up by the Prince's widow Princess Sibylla. The Gustav Adolf medal consists of Prince Gustaf Adolf's crowned name cipher in a granite wreath with the Scout lily, executed in gilded silver. Scouterna - the Guides and Scouts of Sweden (Swedish language, Swedish for ''the Scouts'') is the national Scouting and Girl Guides, Guiding organisation of Sweden. The organisation was formed in 2012 by a restructuring of the Svenska Scoutförbundet and accepted as the successor of the Svenska Scoutrådet by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 2013. The co-educational organisation has about 70,000 members. History The first Swedish organisations for Boy Scouts were founded in 1911 and 1912 and for Girl Guides in 1913. Silver Wolf Award (Scouterna)
The Silver Wolf (Swedish: Silvervargen) is the highest award made by Swedish Scouting, to active leaders at the national level for exceptionally meritorious work. The award consists of a stylized silver wolf with a fleur-de-lis with the words "Scouterna", suspended from a turquoise neck ribbon. The Silver Wolf will be distributed by someone who already holds the award. The Silver Wolf was established in 1920 for extraordinary contributions to Scouting. The original badge also meant that apart from being first-class, the Scout also passed tests for first aid and another 15 specific merit badges. When the 1935 World Scout Conference decided that each country would have a Silver Wolf as the highest award at the national level, Sweden chose to continue with the Silver Wolf but then changed so that the Svenska Scoutunionen (Swedish Scout Union) distributed it. Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten (Gustaf Adolf Oscar Fredrik Arthur Edmund; 22 April 1906 – 26 January 1947) was a Swedish prince, who for most of his life was second in the line of succession to the Swedish throne. He was the eldest son of Gustaf VI Adolf, who was crown prince for most of his son's life and ascended the Swedish throne three years after his son's death. The current king, Carl XVI Gustaf, is Prince Gustaf Adolf's son. The prince was killed on 26 January 1947 in an airplane crash at Kastrup Airport, Copenhagen, Denmark. Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Sibylla Calma Marie Alice Bathildis Feodora; 18 January 1908 – 28 November 1972) was a member of the Swedish royal family and the mother of the current king of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf. Born into the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Sibylla was the daughter of Charles Edward, the last duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She became a Swedish princess when she married Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten in 1932. She thus had the prospect of one day becoming queen, but the prince was killed in an airplane crash in 1947 and did not live to ascend the Swedish throne. Folke Bernadotte
Folke Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg (2 January 1895 – 17 September 1948) was a Swedish nobleman and diplomat. In World War II he negotiated the release of about 31,000 prisoners from German concentration camps, including 450 Danish Jews from the Theresienstadt camp. They were released on 14 April 1945. In 1945 he received a German surrender offer from Heinrich Himmler, though the offer was ultimately rejected. After the war, Bernadotte was unanimously chosen to be the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab–Israeli conflict of 1947–1948. He was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948 by the paramilitary Zionist group Lehi while pursuing his official duties. King Carl XVI Gustaf
Carl XVI Gustaf (Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus; born 30 April 1946) is King of Sweden. He ascended the throne on the death of his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, on 15 September 1973. He is the youngest child and only son of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His father died on 26 January 1947 in an airplane crash in Denmark when Carl Gustaf was nine months old. Luc Panissod (born 1949 in France) was Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). He previously held the role of Deputy Secretary General of WOSM and was made acting WOSM Secretary General in mid-November 2007 in replacement of Eduardo Missoni, following an institutional crisis over leadership and finance. In March 2009 he was officially appointed to the position of Secretary General of WOSM. Panissod laid down his post on 31 December 2011. Bertil Tunje (born 1941) from Borås Sweden, was the vice-chairman of the World Scout Committee, the main executive body of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. He joined as a member of the World Scout Committee 1985 and was elected as Vice-chairman 1990 and served as that until 1996. He was a member of the Steering Committee of the World Scout Committee 1985 to 1996. Tunje served as a member of the WOSM/WAGGGS Consultative Committee 1985–1995, World Programme Committee 1985–1990. Daniel Gil Ownby (born December 2, 1968) is an American energy professional. In 2020 , Ownby was elected to a two-year term as National Chair for the Boy Scouts of America, the highest volunteer position in the Scout Organization. Craig Turpie of Stirling, Scotland, served as chairman of the World Scout Committee, the main executive body of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 2017 to 2021. Since then, Craig has served as the Deputy UK Chief Commissioner for Transformation. In 2022, he was awarded the Bronze Wolf Award for his contributions to world scouting.
