Clark County is a county located in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,995. The county seat is Arkadelphia. The Arkadelphia, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Clark County. History Ancient Indigenous peoples occupied areas along the waterways for thousands of years prior to European exploration. Gurdon is a city in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,212 at the 2010 census. __TOC__ History The town was founded in the late nineteenth century as a railroad town for the timber industry on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway (now the Union Pacific Railroad). Originally settled in 1873, the city was incorporated in 1880. The town's name derives from railroad executive Henry Gurdon Marquand's middle name. Gurdon High School is an accredited comprehensive public high school serving students in grades six through twelve in the rural community of Gurdon, Arkansas, United States. It is one of three public high schools in Clark County and serves the communities of Gurdon, Okolona, and Whelen Springs. With more than 200 students, it is the sole high school of the Gurdon School District. Okolona, Arkansas
Okolona is a town near the western edge of Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 147 at the 2010 census. The Battle of Elkin's Ferry of the Civil War was fought here during April 3–4, 1864, as a part of the Camden Expedition. Union forces, led by Maj. Gen. Fred Steele, sought to ford the Little Missouri River, as the local roads were impassable. The force reached Elkin's Ferry before the Confederate cavalry brigades, led by Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke, and the Confederates were defeated. From 1930 through 1939 the town thrived, being a main hub of operations for the then powerful Ozan Lumber Company.
