Gurdon High School
Gurdon High School is an accredited comprehensive public high school serving students in grades six through twelve in the rural community of Gurdon, Arkansas, United States. It is one of three public high schools in Clark County and serves the communities of Gurdon, Okolona, and Whelen Springs. With more than 200 students, it is the sole high school of the Gurdon School District. Academics The school is accredited by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) and has been accredited by AdvancED since 1930. For the 2009–10 school year, Gurdon High School is rated by the ADE at ''Whole School Improvement - Achieving Year 2'' in Adequate Yearly Progress. Gurdon is a city in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,212 at the 2010 census. __TOC__ History The town was founded in the late nineteenth century as a railroad town for the timber industry on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway (now the Union Pacific Railroad). Originally settled in 1873, the city was incorporated in 1880. The town's name derives from railroad executive Henry Gurdon Marquand's middle name. Okolona, Arkansas
Okolona is a town near the western edge of Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 147 at the 2010 census. The Battle of Elkin's Ferry of the Civil War was fought here during April 3–4, 1864, as a part of the Camden Expedition. Union forces, led by Maj. Gen. Fred Steele, sought to ford the Little Missouri River, as the local roads were impassable. The force reached Elkin's Ferry before the Confederate cavalry brigades, led by Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke, and the Confederates were defeated. Okolona has several churches; the Saint Clair Baptist Church, Okolona Baptist Church, Okolona First United Methodist Church, and Center Grove United Methodist Church. Adrienne Camille Nelson (born 1967) is an American lawyer who is a United States federal judge, United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. She previously served as a judge on the Multnomah County, Oregon, Multnomah County Oregon circuit courts, Circuit Court from 2006 to 2018 and a justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 2018 to 2023. Justin Rory Gonzales (born c. 1982) is an employee of a logging company in Okolona, Arkansas, who is a Republican member of the Arkansas House of Representatives for District 19, which encompasses Clark, Pike, Howard, and Hempstead counties in the southwestern portion of his state. In 2014, he was elected to succeed Democrat Nate Steel, who ran unsuccessfully for state attorney general against Leslie Rutledge in a general Republican sweep of Arkansas elections.
