Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa
Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa was an Indian Sikh civil rights activist, demanding the release of Sikh prisoners from various jails in India. Early life Khalsa was born on 12 December 1965, in Kurukshetra, Haryana to father Ajit Singh and mother Mohinder Kaur. He took primary and Sikh religious education from the Gurdwara Lakhnaur Sahib and was also baptized there. In 1987, he married Jasbir Kaur and had a son. Campaign In November 2013, Khalsa went on a 44-day hunger strike. The campaign was ended after Giani Gurbachan Singh (Akal Thakat Jathedar), said to take up the issue with the State Government. After none of the detained Sikhs was released, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa restarted his hunger strike, one year after his 2013 hunger strike. Kurukshetra
Kurukshetra (, ) is a city and administrative headquarter of Kurukshetra district in the Indian state of Haryana. Sikhs ( or ; pa, ਸਿੱਖ, ' ) are people who adhere to Sikhism, Sikhism (Sikhi), a Monotheism, monotheistic religion that originated in the late 15th century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, based on the revelation of Guru Nanak. Giani Gurbachan Singh
Gurbachan Singh ( pa, ਗੁਰਬਚਨ ਸਿੰਘ; born 6 April 1948) is a Sikh preacher who has served as the jathedar of the Akal Takht from 2008 to 2018. Early life Gurbachan Singh was born in village Chakk Baja of Muktsar, Punjab, India on 6 April 1948. He joined Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee as a granthi on 29 February 1972 of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Muktsar, where he became the head granthi in 1996. Jathedar of the Akal Takht (2008-2018) Subsequent to the dismissal of Joginder Singh Vedanti, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee appointed Singh as the jathedar of the Akal Takht on 06 August 2008. Beant Singh (chief Minister)
Beant Singh (19 February 1922 – 31 August 1995) was an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992 to 1995. He was a member of Indian National Congress. He was assassinated in a suicide bombing. Early life Beant was born in Jhajj Jat Sikh Family from Bilaspur village near Doraha in Ludhiana District. The family migrated to Canal colonies of the West Punjab but shifted to village Kotli (Kotla Afghana) near Payal in the Ludhiana district after partition. Darshan Singh Pheruman
Darshan Singh Pheruman (1 August 1885 – 27 October 1969) was an Indian freedom fighter, Sikh activist and politician. Early life Darshan Singh Pheruman was born on 1 August 1888 at Amritsar, India in a Sikh family. In 1912, he joined Indian Army as a sepoy. In 1914, he left the Army and started his own construction business in Hissar. Pre-Independence activism Later, Pheruman gave up his business and joined the Gurdwara Reform Movement. In 1921, he was arrested and jailed for one year during an agitation launched to recover the keys of the Golden Temple treasury from the British deputy commissioner of Amritsar. Surat Singh Khalsa
Surat Singh Khalsa (born 7 March 1933), also known as "Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa" is a civil rights and political activist, from the Indian state of Punjab. Surat Singh Khalsa has been involved with various political struggles related to Sikhs in Punjab, however he is currently in the limelight for a hunger strike as a form of peaceful protest against illegal and prolonged detention of political prisoners. Hunger Strike On 16 January 2015, Surat Singh Khalsa began a hunger strike which is still ongoing. He has refused food and water to seek the release of Sikh political prisoners who have completed their court sentences.
