Gunārs Astra
Gunārs Astra (22 October 1931 – 6 April 1988) was a Latvian human rights activist and anti-Soviet dissident arrested by the Soviet Union in 1961 and sentenced to prison for 15 years. He was released in 1976. In 1983, he was arrested again but released several weeks before his death. Biography Gunārs Astra was born in Riga, on 22 October 1931. He graduated primary school and later continued his education in an electromechanical technical school. After graduation in 1952, he started to work in one of the largest electromechanical factories in the Latvian SSR – VEF. Because Astra was a very erudite and industrious worker, he was granted a promotion and became chief of the 7th Radio manufacturing workshop. He also studied the English language in university as an external student. In 1958, Gunārs Astra had the chance to meet American diplomats in Riga. Gunārs Priede (1928–2000) was a Latvian playwright, engineer and architect. He was originally a civil engineer for the Soviet government in Latvia who became the most important Latvian playwright of the Soviet era. Gunārs Lūsis (born 1950) is a Latvian artist and graphical designer. Lūsis is notable for creating the design for some of the modern Latvian coins with denominations in Latvian lats, and for authoring the logo for the Latvian presidency of the Council of the European Union. Life Lūsis was born 18 December 1950 in Riga. He graduated 1968 from the Jānis Rozentāls Art High School and 1974 from the Art Academy of Latvia, Faculty of Design. He is member of the Artists' Union of Latvia () since 1978. During the Soviet era he designed posters and the layout of books. Gunārs Ulmanis (1938 – 17 July 2010) was a Latvian football right wing midfielder, one of the most famous Latvian footballers of the 1960s. Biography While at school Ulmanis played both basketball and football but the famous Latvian football coach Vadims Ulbergs persuaded him to devote himself entirely to football. For his first team in the regional competition Ulmanis scored 60 out of the team's 78 goals and was called up to the flagman of Latvian football - Daugava Rīga. In his first game for Daugava - an international game against Polish GKS Katowice - Ulmanis scored 3 goals. He was popular among Latvian football fans for his "lazy" and relaxed playing manner which he was able to alter with unexpected outbursts of energy in form of shots on goal or passes to the center. Gunārs Skvorcovs (born 13 January 1990) is a Latvian ice hockey right winger, currently playing for Odense Bulldogs. Playing career Skvorcovs made his debut for Metalurgs already in 2004-05, when he was only fourteen years old and continued to play in the club system for eight seasons. When in 2012-13 season Liepājas Metalurgs became affiliate of Dinamo Riga of KHL, Svorcovs made his debut in KHL. Eventually he split season between Dinamo and Metalurgs. Gunnar Birkerts ( lv, Gunārs Birkerts, January 17, 1925 – August 15, 2017) was a Latvian American architect who, for most of his career, was based in the metropolitan area of Detroit, Michigan. Some of his notable designs include the Corning Museum of Glass and the Corning Fire Station in Corning, New York; Marquette Plaza in Minneapolis, Minnesota; the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri; and the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2014, the National Library of Latvia in Riga was completed to his design. Biography Birkerts was born and raised in Latvia, but escaped ahead of the advancing Soviet army toward the end of the Second World War.
