Gully Platoon
Gully Platoon are an Australian hip-hop group, composed of Pegz (Tirren Staaf) with Joe New (Joseph Newberry) and Dialectrix (Ryan Leaf). Biography Tirren Staaf, who is also the CEO of Obese Records, founded the group in 2008. He realised his ambitions when Ryan Leaf (originally from the Blue Mountains) came to Melbourne to record the video of his song "Outcast". Soon after Joseph Newbury also from Down Under Beats, the first Australian hip hop group to win Triple J's Unearthed competition, joined the duo. Signed to Obese Records, they released their debut album, ''The Great Divide'', in 2009. The album was the culmination of six months of work from Staaf, Leaf and Newbury who did all the writing, and the production and mixing talents of J Squared, Plutonic Lab and J Smith & Dutchman, as well as vocal help from Kel Timmons, Cisco Tavares and Kulaia. Obese Records
Obese Records was a record label that released music from the Australian hip hop genre. It was the largest Australian independent hip hop label, including performers Pegz, Thundamentals and Dialectrix. Obese Records also operated two retail stores in Melbourne, a record distribution company, a soul imprint named Plethora Records, and operates the artists' management and touring company Obese Records Artist Management. History Founding as OB's record store Obese Records was founded in 1995 as a small record store called OB's by Ollie Bobbitt, in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran. Specialising in hip hop music, the store changed its name to "Obese Records" after Bobbitt sold the business to Shazlek One. Pegz
Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz (or MC Pegasus), is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria. He was the CEO of Obese Records—the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B. Biography Tirren Staaf has said that he was named after Tiran Porter, former member of the Doobie Brothers. Pegz has been a part of the Australian hip hop scene since 1992, and has released four full-length studio albums. As a teenager he was first a graffiti artist before becoming a rapper. In 2000, he got a job at Obese Records, a specialist hip-hop music store in Prahran. He released his first recording, an EP, ''Pegasus'', on the Obese label in 2001, followed by a studio album, ''Capricorn Cat'' in 2003 and ''Axis'' in 2005. Dialectrix
Ryan Leaf, better known by the stage name Dialectrix, is an Australian hip hop artist from Sydney. He was a member of Down Under Beats Crew (DUB Crew) and, since 2008, has been a member of Gully Platoon. In addition to his musical career, Dialectrix works in the construction trades. He was introduced to hip hop culture through skateboarding during adolescence.
