Dialectrix
Ryan Leaf, better known by the stage name Dialectrix, is an Australian hip hop artist from Sydney. He was a member of Down Under Beats Crew (DUB Crew) and, since 2008, has been a member of Gully Platoon. In addition to his musical career, Dialectrix works in the construction trades. He was introduced to hip hop culture through skateboarding during adolescence. Leigh Ryan, better known by the stage name Plutonic Lab or sometimes as Pluto is an Australian music producer, engineer, artist & performer. Obese Records
Obese Records was a record label that released music from the Australian hip hop genre. It was the largest Australian independent hip hop label, including performers Pegz, Thundamentals and Dialectrix. Obese Records also operated two retail stores in Melbourne, a record distribution company, a soul imprint named Plethora Records, and operates the artists' management and touring company Obese Records Artist Management. History Founding as OB's record store Obese Records was founded in 1995 as a small record store called OB's by Ollie Bobbitt, in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran. Specialising in hip hop music, the store changed its name to "Obese Records" after Bobbitt sold the business to Shazlek One. Gully Platoon
Gully Platoon are an Australian hip-hop group, composed of Pegz (Tirren Staaf) with Joe New (Joseph Newberry) and Dialectrix (Ryan Leaf). Biography Tirren Staaf, who is also the CEO of Obese Records, founded the group in 2008. He realised his ambitions when Ryan Leaf (originally from the Blue Mountains) came to Melbourne to record the video of his song "Outcast". Soon after Joseph Newbury also from Down Under Beats, the first Australian hip hop group to win Triple J's Unearthed competition, joined the duo. Signed to Obese Records, they released their debut album, ''The Great Divide'', in 2009. Australian Hip Hop
Australian hip hop traces its origins to the early 1980s and is largely inspired by hip hop and other urban musical genres from the United States. Thundamentals
Thundamentals are an Australian hip hop group originating from the Blue Mountains region bordering the metropolitan area of Sydney. The members are currently Tuka, Jeswon, and Morgs. They have released five studio albums. History Band origins: 2008–2010 Before becoming Thundamentals, the band consisted of DJ Morgs, Tommy Fiasko, MC Jeswon, MC Tuksnatch, MC Ruthless and DJ Clockwork, and was called Connect 4. Today, the band consists of DJ Morgs (Morgan Jones), MC Jeswon (Jesse Ferris), MC Tuka (Brendan Tuckerman) and DJ Poncho (Kevin Kerr). Pegz
Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz (or MC Pegasus), is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria. He was the CEO of Obese Records—the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B. Biography Tirren Staaf has said that he was named after Tiran Porter, former member of the Doobie Brothers. Pegz has been a part of the Australian hip hop scene since 1992, and has released four full-length studio albums. As a teenager he was first a graffiti artist before becoming a rapper. In 2000, he got a job at Obese Records, a specialist hip-hop music store in Prahran. Drapht
Paul Reid, formerly Paul Gary James Ridge, (born 4 September 1982), better known by the stage name Drapht, is an Australian hip hop artist from Perth. Drapht is a member of the Syllabolix (SBX) crew, a collective that includes fellow Perth-based hip hop artists such as Downsyde. Biography 1982–2002: Early life Drapht grew up in North Perth, Western Australia, a suburb of Perth. His father, Gary Ridge, a jazz drummer introduced Drapht to music from a very young age—he first experienced hip hop at the age of eight. Australian Music Prize
The Australian Music Prize (often shortened to the AMP) is an annual award of $30,000 given to an Australian band or solo artist in recognition of the merit of an album released during the year of award. The award was made by Australian Music Prize Ltd, a sole-purpose entity sponsored by a variety of music industry figures and record companies. The AMP was established in 2005. Wayne "Lotek" Bennett
Wayne "Lotek" Bennett (born 1977 in Gosport, England) is a music producer, songwriter and rapper from the UK. He is most famous for his work with Roots Manuva and more recently with Speech Debelle, producing her debut album ''Speech Therapy'' which won the 2009 Mercury Prize. In 2005, Lotek won the BBC Performing Arts Fund's Urban Music Award and was quoted as saying, "with the Performing Arts Fund money I bought a laptop, microphone and a compact mixer. MF Doom
Daniel Dumile ( ; July 13, 1971October 31, 2020), best known by his stage name MF Doom or simply Doom (both stylized in all caps), was a British-American rapper and record producer. Noted for his intricate wordplay, signature metal mask, and "supervillain" stage persona, Dumile became a major figure of underground hip hop and alternative hip hop in the 2000s. Bob Evans (musician)
Kevin Edward Mitchell (born 1 October 1977), also known by the stage name of Bob Evans, is an Australian singer-songwriter; Mitchell uses the name for his primary solo project. He is also the founding lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the alternative rock band Jebediah, which was formed in 1994 and features his older brother Brett Mitchell, who joined on drums before the group's first performance. Jebediah released five studio albums between 1997 and 2011, the first three of which entered the top ten on the ARIA Albums Chart.
