Guimaras , officially the Province of Guimaras ( hil, Kapuoran sang Guimaras; tl, Lalawigan ng Guimaras), is an island province in the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Jordan while its largest local government unit is the municipality of Buenavista. The province is situated in the Panay Gulf, between the islands of Panay and Negros. To the northwest is the province of Iloilo and to the southeast is Negros Occidental. The whole island is part of the Metro Iloilo''–''Guimaras, one of the twelve metropolitan areas of the Philippines. The province consists primarily of Guimaras Island, and also includes Inampulugan, Guiwanon (or Guiuanon), Panobolon, Natunga, Nadulao, and many surrounding islets. Jordan (), officially the Municipality of Jordan ( hil, Banwa sang Jordan; tl, Bayan ng Jordan), is a 3rd class municipality of the Philippines, municipality and capital of the Philippine Province, province of Guimaras, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 39,566 people, making it the third largest settlement in the province. With a wharf closest to Iloilo City and a central location, Jordan is also the commercial center of the island. Buenavista, officially the Municipality of Buenavista ( hil, Banwa sang Buenavista; tl, Bayan ng Buenavista), is a 2nd class municipality and the largest settlement in the province of Guimaras, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 52,899 people. The town acts as a cheaper link between Panay and Negros, as opposed to taking a ship directly between the two islands. Western Visayas ( hil, Kabisay-an Nakatundan; tl, Kanlurang Kabisayaan or ''Kanlurang Visayas'') is an administrative region in the Philippines, numerically designated as Region VI. Guimaras Provincial Board
The Guimaras Provincial Board is the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial legislature) of the Philippine province of Guimaras. The members are elected via plurality-at-large voting: the province is divided into two districts, each having four seats. A voter votes up to four names, with the top four candidates per district being elected. The vice governor is the ''ex officio'' presiding officer, and only votes to break ties. The vice governor is elected via the plurality voting system province-wide. The districts used in appropriation of members is not coextensive with the legislative district of Guimaras; unlike congressional representation which is at-large, Guimaras is divided into two districts for representation in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. Nueva Valencia, officially the Municipality of Nueva Valencia ( hil, Banwa sang Nueva Valencia; tl, Bayan ng Nueva Valencia), is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Guimaras, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 42,771 people. Its territory includes the islands of Guiwanon (or Guiuanon), Panobolon, as well as numerous other minor islets. Legislative District Of Guimaras
The legislative districts of Guimaras are the representations of the province of Guimaras in the various national legislatures of the Philippines. The province is currently represented in the lower house of the Congress of the Philippines through its lone congressional district. Taklong Island
Taklong Island is the main island of the Taklong Island National Marine Reserve located in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, off the southern end of the island of Guimaras, in the West Visayas of the Philippines. A marine biological station run by the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) of nearby Iloilo Province is found in this island. The one-storey Station established in 1977 and renovated twice (in 1987 and in 2008) sits on a 1.64 hectares parcel of land donated to UP in 1964, with Carlos P. Romulo as then University President. Donors included the family of the first Lieutenant Governor of then SubProvince of Guimaras, the late Antonio Ortiz. Panay Gulf is an extension of the Sulu Sea, reaching between the islands of Panay and Negros in the Philippines. Hiligaynon Language
Hiligaynon, also often referred to as Ilonggo or Binisaya/Bisaya nga Hiniligaynon/Inilonggo, is an Austronesian regional language spoken in the Philippines by about 9.1 million people, predominantly in Western Visayas and Soccsksargen, most of whom belong to the Hiligaynon people. It is the second-most widely spoken language in the Visayas and belongs to the Bisayan languages, and is more distantly related to other Philippine languages. It also has one of the largest native language-speaking populations of the Philippines, despite it not being taught and studied formally in schools and universities until 2012. Balaan Bukid
Balaan bukid (, ) is a 558 feet (170 meters) mountain, located in Barangay Balcon Melliza, Jordan, Guimaras in the Philippines. This site has a church and a huge cross which can be seen from Iloilo City coast and known for being a pilgrimage site of Catholic devotees especially during the Holy Week.
