Guelph Junction Railway
The Guelph Junction Railway is a shortline railway owned by the City of Guelph, Ontario, and serves the city's northwest industrial park. The railway was the first federally chartered railway in the Commonwealth of Nations to be owned by a municipality, and is among few remaining in Canada (e.g. the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway and the Capital Railway). History The railway was incorporated in 1884 by Guelph merchants because of the indifference of the Grand Trunk Railway, which was the only choice for freight since 1856. Competition was the only answer to high rates. These plans were expanded in 1887, when authorization was obtained to lay down a further line to the northwest of Guelph, originally with the intention of going to Goderich but eventually ending at Linwood. Clinton, Ontario
Clinton is a community in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in the municipality of Central Huron. Clinton was established in 1831, when Jonas Gibbings and brothers Peter and Stephen Vanderburg cleared out a small area to start. Clinton started to grow in 1844 when William Rattenbury laid out the plans to begin making a village. In 1954, Clinton's population was 2,625 people. Today, it has an estimated population of 3203. Clinton is known as Canada's home of radar and there is a large radar antenna in the downtown because of its association with RCAF Station Clinton during World War II. Guelph And Goderich Railway
The Guelph and Goderich Railway was a railway in southern Ontario, Canada. It came about from a desire for a connection from Guelph to the harbour at Goderich on Lake Huron. History The city of Guelph owned the Guelph Junction Railway (GJR, incorporated in 1884 and owned by a consortium of merchants and the City of Guelph) to connect to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline 15 miles south of town in Campbellville. This line was completed in 1888 and by May 1887 had been leased to the CPR. The railway's charter was amended in 1886 to allow construction of a line to Goderich which was delayed for several years. Eventually, the city of Guelph applied pressure on the CPR to get the line built. The CPR had finished three surveys for the Goderich line by December 1903; the first via Linwood, Atwood, Brussels and Listowel; the second via Conestogo, Linwood, Atwood, Brussels; and the third via Seaforth and Clinton. Ontario Southland Railway
The Ontario Southland Railway Inc. is an independently held short line operator. The company was founded in 1992 to purchase of track between Tillsonburg and Ingersoll, Ontario from the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 2009, a second line was added, as of CPR track from Woodstock to St. Thomas, Ontario were integrated into the system. In 2015, Ontario Southland began leasing the ex-Canadian National Cayuga Subdivision between St. Thomas and Delhi, Ontario, which had been abandoned by its former shortline operator the St. Thomas and Eastern Railway in 2013. The OSR also operated the Guelph Junction Railway until August 28th, 2020, when they ran their last train on the line before transferring operations to the Goderich and Exeter Railway. Listowel is an unincorporated community in Ontario, Canada, located in the Municipality of North Perth. Incorporated as the Town of Listowel in 1875, it was dissolved in 1998 following amalgamation with several other communities in the northern section of Perth County. Stratford is a city on the Avon River within Perth County in southwestern Ontario, Canada, with a 2016 population of 31,465 in a land area of . Stratford is the seat of Perth County, which was settled by English, Irish, Scottish and German immigrants, in almost equal numbers, starting in the 1820s but primarily in the 1830s and 1840s.
