Guatapé
Guatapé is a town and Municipalities of Colombia, municipality in the Antioquia Department, Department of Antioquia, Colombia. It is a part of the subregion of Eastern Antioquia and is located from Medellín, the capital of the department. Guatapé is bordered on the north by Alejandría, San Rafael, Antioquia, San Rafael to the east, and Granada, Antioquia, Granada and El Peñol, Antioquia, El Peñol to the south. This town is the gathering place for ''Las Vegas'', referring to the small farms of the area. It lies at an altitude of 1,890 meters (6,200 ft) above sea level. The town is a major tourist attraction, especially for travelers from Medellín. El Peñón De Guatapé
The Rock of () ( Tahamí language: ''Mojarrá'') is a landmark inselberg in Colombia. It is located in the town and municipality of Guatapé, Antioquia. It is also known as The Stone of , or simply or (), as the town of , which borders , has also historically claimed the rock as their own and thus has led to different names for the site. The landform is a granitic rock remnant that has resisted weathering and erosion, likely as result of being less fractured than the surrounding bedrock. The Peñón de Guatapé is an outcrop of the Antioquia Batholith and towers up to 200 meters (656 feet) above its base. Visitors can scale the rock via a staircase with 708 steps built into one side (an entrance fee is due). Near the base of the Rock, there are food and market stalls for shopping. El Peñol, Antioquia
El Peñol is a town and municipality in Antioquia Department, Colombia. The population was 16,223 at the 2018 census. It is part of the subregion of Eastern Antioquia. The town is nationally known for the nearby monolith known also as El Peñol, which is a tourist attraction. History The town was originally founded along the Negro-Nare River in 1714 by Fray Miguel de Castro y Rivadeneiro. The area was inhabited by the indigenous Tahamí people prior to the Spanish arrival and colonization of the area. In 1971, Empresas Públicas de Medellín determined that more water and power was needed to support the rapidly growing city of Medellín, located approximately 50mi/30km to the west, and decided that the Negro-Nare River should be dammed at Guatape, flooding the Negro-Nare River valley in which El Peñol was located. Punchiná Dam
The Punchiná Dam is an embankment dam on the Guatapé River east of San Carlos in Antioquia Department, Colombia. The dam creates Punchiná Reservoir, which is part of the San Carlos Hydroelectric Power Plant. The power plant was completed in two stages; the first was completed in 1984 and the second in 1987. It is the largest power station in Colombia. Background The project was initiated by Interconexión Eléctrica S.A. in 1973 and appraised in 1978. In May 1978, a World Bank loan was approved to help fund the dam and both stages of the power plant. Construction began in 1979, the dam was completed in 1983 and the last generator of stage one was operational in 1984. Stage two's final generator was operational in December 1987. Alejandría
Alejandría (Spanish for the name Alexandria) is a town and municipality in the Antioquia Department, Colombia. It is part of the sub-region of Eastern Antioquia and is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Concepción, Santo Domingo and San Roque, on the east by the municipality of San Rafael, on the south by the municipalities of San Rafael and Guatapé, and on the west by the municipalities of El Penol and Concepción.
