Guasimal
Guasimal is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Sancti Spíritus, in Sancti Spíritus Province. In 2011 it had a population of about 5,000. History The village was founded in 1865. In late 1950s, during the Cuban Revolution, Che Guevara established his first guerrilla camp near the town. In November 2010, Aero Caribbean Flight 883 crashed near the village. Geography Located on a plain between Zaza Reservoir and the Caribbean Coast, Guasimal is a rural village surrounded by some scattered hillocks and a forest area. It is 11 km from Paredes, 17 from Entronque Guasimal, 20 from Tunas de Zaza, 23 from Banao, 27 from Sancti Spíritus, 36 from La Sierpe and 74 from Trinidad. Nearest rivers are Mayabuna (west) and Zaza (east). Transport The village is served by a railway station on the Sancti Spíritus-Tunas de Zaza line. Aero Caribbean Flight 883
Aero Caribbean Flight 883 was a domestic scheduled passenger service from Port-au-Prince, Haiti to Havana, Cuba with a stopover in Santiago de Cuba. On 4 November 2010, the ATR 72 operating the route crashed in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spíritus, killing all 61 passengers and 7 crew members aboard. Along with American Eagle Flight 4184 it was the worst crash in ATR 72 history until Yeti Airlines Flight 691 crashed 12 years later killing 72 passengers and crew. Accident The aircraft departed Santiago de Cuba en route to Havana around 16:50 local time (20:50 UTC). It was the last flight out of Santiago de Cuba airport before it was closed because of the approach of Hurricane Tomas. At 17:42, the aircraft crashed near the village of Guasimal in Sancti Spíritus province, some southeast of Havana, after issuing a distress call. Circuito Sur
The ''Circuito Sur'' (CS), meaning "Southern Circuit", is a west-east highway connecting Artemisa to Sancti Spíritus, through the southern and coastal side of central-western Cuba.Source: ''Mapa de Carreteras de Cuba'' (Road map of Cuba). Zaza Dam
The Zaza Dam is an embankment dam on the Zaza River about southwest of Sancti Spíritus in Sancti Spíritus Province, Cuba. The dam was completed in 1972 with the primary purpose of irrigation but it also supports a small hydroelectric power station. The dam's reservoir, Zaza Reservoir, has a storage capacity of , making it the largest in the country. Trinidad, Cuba
Trinidad () is a town in the province of Sancti Spíritus, central Cuba. Together with the nearby Valle de los Ingenios, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988, because of its historical importance as a center of the sugar trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Trinidad is one of the best-preserved cities in the Caribbean from the time when the sugar trade was the main industry in the region.
