Guamá, Cuba
Guamá is a municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province of Cuba. The municipal seat is located in the town of Chivirico. It was named after Guamá, the Taíno cacique who led a rebellion against the Spanish 1530s. Geography Guamá is located in the south-west of the province, and contains most of the Caribbean Sea coast west of Santiago de Cuba. It includes the town of Chivirico and the villages of Aserradero, Buey Cabón, Caletón Blanco, Cañizo, Cayo Damas, Dos Ríos, El Francés, El Macho, Guamá Abajo, Juan González, La Magdalena, La Mula, La Plata, La Uvita, Las Cuevas, Ocujal, Quiebra Seca, Río Seco and Uvero. Pico Turquino
Pico Turquino (), sometimes erroneously spelled as Pico Torquino, is the highest point in Cuba. It is located in the southeast part of the island, in the Sierra Maestra mountain range in the municipality of Guamá, Santiago de Cuba Province. Etymology The name is believed to be a corruption of the phrase for "turquoise peak" ( es, ), so-named for its apparent blue hues seen by the heights in certain views. History The peak was first mentioned (under the name "Tarquino") on a map drawn by Geert de Kremer in the late 16th century. The first documented ascent of the peak was in 1860 by Fred W. Ramsden, a twenty-year-old Englishman then living in Santiago de Cuba. The climb was not widely publicized at the time. In 1915 the Swedish botanist Erik Leonard Ekman climbed the mountain and speculated that he was probably the first person to have done so. Palma Soriano
Palma Soriano is a Cuban city and municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province. With a population of 125,385 in the city proper, it is the second-largest in the province and the 16th-largest in Cuba. History The city was founded in 1825, uniting ranches (''haciendas'') that stood in this area, and was the place where the body of José Martí (the leader of the Cuban independence movement, killed in 1895, in the Battle of Dos Ríos) was brought before it was laid in its final resting place in Santiago de Cuba. Tercer Frente (, Spanish for "Third Front") is a municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province of Cuba. It is centered on the town, and municipal seat, of Cruce de los Baños. Granma Province
Granma is one of the provinces of Cuba. Its capital is Bayamo. Other towns include Manzanillo (a port on the Gulf of Guacanayabo) and Pilón. History The province takes its name from the yacht '' Granma'', used by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro to land in Cuba with 82 guerrillas on December 2, 1956; until 1976 the area formed part of Santiago de Cuba larger province " Oriente Province". The American who sold the guerillas the secondhand yacht in Mexico apparently had named it "Granma" ("Granma", more usually "Grandma", is an affectionate term for a grandmother) after his grandmother. The name of the vessel became an icon for Cuban communism. Uvero
Uvero, also known as El Uvero, is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Guamá, in Santiago de Cuba Province. In 2011 it had a population of 2,581. History The toponym derives from the Spanish common name of some species of ''Coccoloba'', a genus of trees, found by Spanish explorers, at the entrance of the village, in the 18th century.
