Guam Highway 11 (GH-11) is one of the primary automobile highways in the United States territory of Guam. Route description This spur route from GH-1 runs westward along Cabras Island, a narrow peninsula which forms the northern edge of Apra Harbor. This area houses Guam's commercial port facilities, making GH-11 an important transport route. The Port Authority of Guam is located on this highway within the port facilities. The road's designation ends at the control gate to the access road leading out to the man-made Glass Breakwater. Piti, Guam
Piti is a Villages of Guam, village located on the central west coast of the United States territory of Guam. It contains northern and eastern coastlines of Apra Harbor, including Cabras Island, which has the commercial Port of Guam and the island's largest power plants. Piti was a pre-Spanish Chamorro people, CHamoru village and, after Spanish colonization, became the primary port town on Guam. The town was largely destroyed during the 1944 Battle of Guam (1944), liberation of Guam and the population relocated during the wartime construction of Apra Harbor. Geography Piti is located along the coastline between the villages of Asan-Maina, Guam, Asan-Maina in the north and Santa Rita, Guam, Santa Rita in the south. Cabras Island
Cabras Island was historically a low-lying finger of land off the coast of Piti, Guam that formed part of the northern protective arm of Apra Harbor. Shortly after the 1944 Battle of Guam it was connected by a causeway to the mainland and extended by the Glass Breakwater, and is now typically referred to simply as Cabras. Cabras houses both the Port of Guam and the primary Guam Power Authority generators supplying Guam. It lends its name to both a small vessel Cabras Marina, near the mainland, and the large vessel Cabras Channel, connecting the port to the deeper waters of the middle harbor. History A corruption of the CHamoru name for Cabras, ''apapa'', meaning "low", gives Apra Harbor its name. Before the twentieth century, Apra Harbor was protected by the Guam mainland to the east; Cabras Island, Luminao Reef, and Calalan Bank to the north; and Orote Peninsula to the south. Guam Highway 1
Guam Highway 1 (GH-1), also known as Marine Corps Drive, is one of the primary automobile routes in the United States territory of Guam. It runs in a southwest-to-northeast direction, from the main gate of Naval Base Guam in the southwestern village of Santa Rita in a northeasterly direction to the main gate of Andersen Air Force Base in the village of Yigo. It passes through Guam's capital, Hagåtña, as well as intersecting other territorial highways. The highway runs through tropical forest, urbanized commercial areas, and residential neighborhoods. The US military upgraded and extended the road starting in 1941. Construction ceased with the Japanese invasion in December 1941 and resumed after the Second Battle of Guam in 1944. Apra Harbor
Apra Harbor, also called Port Apra, is a deep-water port on the western side of the United States territory of Guam. It is considered one of the best natural ports in the Pacific Ocean. The harbor is bounded by Cabras Island and the Glass Breakwater to the north and the Orote Peninsula in the south. Naval Base Guam and the Port of Guam are the two major users of the harbor. It is also a popular recreation area for boaters, surfers, scuba divers, and other recreationalists. Geography The geography of Apra Harbor has been extensively modified from its pre-historical state by humans. The entrance to the harbor is flanked by Point Udall, formerly Orote Point, to the south and Spanish Rocks at the tip of the Glass Breakwater.
