Grotus
Grotus, stylized as G̈r̈oẗus̈, was an industrial rock band from San Francisco, active from 1989 to 1996. Their unique sound incorporated sampled Folk music, ethnic instruments, two drummers, two bassists, and featured angry but humorous lyrics. Biography The group started in 1989, when Adam Tanner and John Carson, burned out from failed rock bands, decided to make music for films, and bought 2 Akai S-950 samplers. Having technical difficulties, they asked their friend Lars Fox to help figure out how to use them, and Fox asserted himself as their singer. Their first songs came quickly, and the trio headed to Dancing Dog Studio in Emeryville, California, Emeryville, to record with David Bryson (soon to be a member of Counting Crows). A visit to radio station KUSF (defunct), KUSF's local music show yielded an invitation to perform at a showcase within a few weeks of starting. ''Slow Motion Apocalypse'' is the second studio album by Grotus, released on April 20, 1993, by Alternative Tentacles. Boasting eastern music influences and a more mature sound, the album is considered by some to be the highlight of their career, despite Allmusic considering ''Brown'' their best album pick. The album also leans towards a more metal sound, unlike the first and last releases. Release and reception ''Trouser Press'' noted that the album contains "the alluring music of ''Luddite'' and a judicious bit of the sampling activity of ''Brown''" and "Middle Eastern flavor that conjures images of an armor-plated belly dancer." ''Luddite'' is an EP by Grotus, released in 1992 by Spirit Music Industries. Release and reception In writing for AllMusic, critic Ned Raggett said, "finding its own way around industrial/rock fusions without simply recreating Ministry or Nine Inch Nails, the foursome explores grinding rhythms without an eye to either thrash metal or dancefloors, Lars Fox's roared vocals calling the tune (or lack thereof)." He awarded it three stars, concluding that "Luddite makes for a good slice of Grotus at its pre-major-label peak." ''Mass'' is the third and last full-length album by the experimental band Grotus. The album's sound focuses more on alternative and blues rock than industrial and is perhaps their most accessible recording. The band broke up the same year the album was released. Alternative Tentacles
Alternative Tentacles is an independent record label established in 1979 in San Francisco, California. It was used by Dead Kennedys for the self-produced single " California Über Alles". After realizing the potential for an independent label, they released records for other bands as well. Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay Ray and vocalist Jello Biafra formed Alternative Tentacles, but Biafra became the sole owner in the mid-1980s. Alternative Tentacles no longer owns the rights to Dead Kennedys recordings after a 2000 lawsuit. Faith No More is an American rock band from San Francisco, California, formed in 1979. Before settling on the current name in July 1983, the band performed under the names Sharp Young Men and later Faith No Man. Jello Biafra
Eric Reed Boucher (born June 17, 1958), known professionally as Jello Biafra, is an American singer, spoken word artist and politician. He is the former lead singer and songwriter for the San Francisco punk rock band Dead Kennedys. Initially active from 1979 to 1986, Dead Kennedys were known for rapid-fire music topped with Biafra's sardonic lyrics and biting social commentary, delivered in his "unique quiver of a voice". When the band broke up in 1986, he took over the influential independent record label Alternative Tentacles, which he had founded in 1979 with Dead Kennedys bandmate East Bay Ray.
