Groot Henar
Groot Henar is a resort in Suriname, located in the Nickerie District Nickerie is a district of Suriname, on the north-west coast. Nickerie's capital city is Nieuw-Nickerie. Another town is Wageningen. The district borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Surinamese district of Coronie to the east, the Surinames ..., near the bridge over the Nickerie River. Its population at the 2012 census was 2,709, most of which are East Indian. The resort has been named after the plantation Henar which was turned into small agricultural plots after the abolition of slavery. The cultivatable area was increased with the Henarpolder created in the 1920s. 1970 the Europolder was created adding 3,700 hectares to the resort. Groot Henar has a school, and a clinic. Suriname is divided into 10 districts ( nl, districten). Nickerie District
Nickerie is a district of Suriname, on the north-west coast. Nickerie's capital city is Nieuw-Nickerie. Another town is Wageningen. The district borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Surinamese district of Coronie to the east, the Surinamese district of Sipaliwini to the south and the region of East Berbice-Corentyne in Guyana to the west. Nickerie has a population of 36.639 (2004) and an area of 5,353 km2. Nickerie's population includes East Indian, Javanese, Afro-Surinamese, Chinese, and Europeans. Nickerie is bordered with Guyana. Indo-Surinamese
Indo-Surinamese, Indian-Surinamese or Hindustani Surinamese are people of Indian origin who are nationals of Suriname with ancestry from India and the wider subcontinent. Their ancestors were Indian indentured workers brought by the Dutch and the British to the (then) Dutch colony of Suriname during the mid-19th to the early 20th century. Per the 2012 Census of Suriname, 148,443 citizens of Suriname are of Indo-Surinamese origin, constituting 27.4% of the total population, making them the largest ethnic group in Suriname on an individual level. Etymology Indo-Surinamese are also known locally by the Dutch term ''Hindoestanen'' (), derived from the word '' Hindustani'', lit., "someone from Hindustan". Hence, when Indians migrated to Suriname they were referred to as Hindustanis, people of Indian origin.
