Groot Begijnhof Sint-Amandsberg
The Groot Begijnhof Sint-Amandsberg is an eight-hectare beguinage in the Sint-Amandsberg suburb just outside the centre of the Belgian city of Ghent. It was built between 1873 and 1874 on the abandonment of the Old Saint Elisabeth Beguinage in the city centre. There is also a third beguinage in Ghent, that of Our-Lady Ter Hooyen. History Around 1234 Joanne of Constantinople founded a small and large beguinage in Ghent, both dedicated to Saint Elisabeth. In the second half of the 19th century these fell into difficulties with the city authorities, since they were on sites needed for urban expansion. New streets were being built and new canals cut and so their isolated nature was lost. Eventually the city sought an alternative site for the beguinages outside the city centre. Beguinage
A beguinage, from the French term ''béguinage'', is an architectural complex which was created to house beguines: lay religious women who lived in community without taking vows or retiring from the world. Originally the beguine institution was the convent, an association of beguines living together or in close proximity of each other under the guidance of a single superior, called a mistress or prioress. Although they were not usually referred to as "convents", in these houses dwelt a small number of women together: the houses small, informal, and often poor communities that emerged across Europe after the twelfth century. In most cases, beguines who lived in a convent agreed to obey certain regulations during their stay and contributed to a collective fund. Engelbert August Anton of Arenberg (Brussels, 11 May 1824 – Arenberg Castle, 28 March 1875) was 8th Duke of Arenberg and 14th Duke of Aarschot. He was the son of Prosper Louis, 7th Duke of Arenberg, and belonged to one of the most important European noble families. A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area with legal protection by an international convention administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Neo-Gothic
Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. Elisabeth Of Thuringia
Elizabeth of Hungary (german: Heilige Elisabeth von Thüringen, hu, Árpád-házi Szent Erzsébet, sk, Svätá Alžbeta Uhorská; 7 July 1207 – 17 November 1231), also known as Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia, or Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia, was a princess of the Kingdom of Hungary and the landgravine of Thuringia in Germany. Jean-Baptiste Bethune {April 25, 1821 - June 18, 1894) was a Belgian architect, artisan and designer who played a pivotal role in the Belgian and Catholic Gothic Revival movement. He was called by some the "''Pugin of Belgium''", with reference to the influence on Bethune of the English Gothic Revival architect and designer, Augustus Pugin. Arthur Théodore Verhaegen (31 August 1847 in Brussels – 5 September 1917 in Elsene) was a Gothic Revival Belgian architect and a politician of the Catholic Party, one of the founders of Belgian Christian democracy. He was a grandson of the politician and lawyer Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen. Life Verhaegen began his career as a civil engineer at Charleroi. In 1872, after his marriage to Claire Lammens, he moved to Ghent and dedicated himself to arts and crafts in the Gothic Revival style. Sint-Amandsberg is a sub-municipality of Ghent, Belgium. The municipality was formed in 1872 after splitting from Oostakker. It is served by the Bus and train station of Gent Dampoort on the Ghent Antwerp NMBS/SNCB line. During the First World War, on 7 June 1915, the German airschip LZ37 crashed after being destroyed by Reginald Warneford.
