Groenplaats
The Groenplaats (Green Square) is a large square in the center of the Belgian city of Antwerp, situated south of the Antwerp cathedral. There are various trees with benches on the square, which is a 'resting place'. A statue of Rubens, designed in 1840 and erected in 1843 by Willem Geefs, is in the center of the square. Adjacent lie many cafes as well as a Hilton hotel, located in the old Grand Bazar building. An underground parking garage and the Groenplaats metro station are situated underneath the square. History At least since the 13th century, the south side of the Cathedral of Our Lady served as an Antwerp cemetery, for the poorer residents who could not afford to be buried in the church itself. The cemetery was a part of the allodial land owned by the Cathedral chapter without any feudal obligations. Groenplaats premetro station is an Antwerp premetro The Antwerp Premetro is a network consisting of lines 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 15 of the Antwerp Tram system. Located underneath the ''Groenplaats'', it is served by lines 3, 5, 9 and 15. Groenplaats premetro station was opened on 25 March 1975 and is one of the oldest premetro stations in Antwerp. It is recognizable by the green decoration on the platform toward Linkeroever in the brick decoration toward Meir. On the platforms one can see ''The Rainforest'', an artwork of Menno, a green tile wall in waves. Originally was this station a terminus. There was a loop underneath the ''Groenplaats'' where the trams could go back to Meir. The loop is now a dead end. The level -1 is a ticket hall and leads to two platforms. The Cathedral of Our Lady ( nl, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Antwerp, Belgium. Today's see of the Diocese of Antwerp started in 1352 and, although the first stage of construction was ended in 1521, has never been 'completed'. In Gothic style, its architects were Jan and Pieter Appelmans. It contains a number of significant works by the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, as well as paintings by artists such as Otto van Veen, Jacob de Backer and Marten de Vos. Guillaume Geefs
Guillaume Geefs (10 September 1805 – 19 January 1883), also Willem Geefs, was a Belgian sculptor. Although known primarily for his monumental works and public portraits of statesmen and nationalist figures, he also explored mythological subject matter, often with an erotic theme. Life Guillaume Geefs was born in Antwerp, Belgium, the eldest of six brothers in a family of sculptors, the best-known of whom are Joseph Geefs (1808–1885, winner of the Prix de Rome in 1836) and Jean Geefs (1825–1860, and winner of the prize in 1846). Guillaume first studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp under the late–Flemish Baroque sculptor Jan Frans van Geel and his son, Jan Lodewijk van Geel, who was also a sculptor. GB (''Grand Bazar'') was a Belgian supermarket chain, until 2000 owned by the GIB Group when it was taken over by the Carrefour Group. History In 1958 the first Super GB is created and opened. FIBA 3x3 World Cup
The FIBA 3x3 World Cup is a 3x3 basketball tournament for national teams organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The debut of the tournament then named as the FIBA 3x3 World Championship was held in August 2012 in Athens, Greece. The current champions are Serbia in the men's division and France in the women's division. There are two events in the tournament; one for men and another for women.
