Grimston Railway Station
Grimston was a railway station serving Saxelbye village in the English county of Leicestershire. It was opened on the Nottingham direct line of the Midland Railway between London and Nottingham via Corby.The station was formerly named Saxelbye, the name was changed after only 3 months to avoid confusion with Saxby, a few miles east of Melton Mowbray, on the Midland's other line between Leicester and Peterborough. The village of Grimston lies about one mile to the north west of the former Grimston station. The line still exists today as the Old Dalby Test Track. History The station was opened for goods (1 November 1879) & passengers (2 February 1880) by the Midland Railway. The station was designed by the Midland Railway company architect John Holloway Sanders. It was on its cut-off line from to . Grimston, Leicestershire
Grimston is a village and civil parish in the Melton (borough), Melton district, in the English county of Leicestershire. The parish includes the village of Saxelbye and the hamlet of Shoby. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 294. On 1 April 1936 the parishes of Saxelby and Shoby were merged with Grimston. Although the current civil parish is called "Grimston" its parish council is called "Grimston, Saxelbye and Shoby Parish Council". The village's name means 'farm/settlement of Grimr'. Amenities Grimston has a pub, a place of worship and once had a railway station called Grimston railway station. British Rail Class 390
The British Rail Class 390 ''Pendolino'' is a type of electric high-speed passenger train operated by Avanti West Coast in the United Kingdom, leased from Angel Trains. They are electric multiple units using Fiat Ferroviaria's tilting train Pendolino technology and built by Alstom. Fifty-three units were originally built between 2001 and 2004 for operation on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). They were ordered as eight-car units, later extended to nine cars, of which some were then lengthened further to 11 cars. These new 11-car trains were renumbered as the subclass 390/1. Advanced Passenger Train
The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached , only to be bested by the service prototype APT-P at in December 1979. John Holloway Sanders
John Holloway Sanders FRIBA (1825 – 16 October 1884) was an architect based in England and chief architect of the Midland Railway until 1884. His date of appointment as Chief Architect to the Midland Railway is not known, but he is recorded as working for them in 1845.
