Grigoris Varfis
Grigoris Varfis ( el, Γρηγόρης Βάρφης; 2 January 1927, Athens – 10 September 2017, Athens) was a Greek politician. For the second half of 1983 Varfis was President of the Council of the European Union. Later, he was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 24 July 1984 to 5 January 1985, where he represented the interests of the Socialist Party (PASOK). Vasso Papandreou
Vasso Papandreou (born 31 July 1944 in Valimitika) is a Greek politician. After being in exile during the rule of the Greek junta, she returned to Greece in 1974 and was a founding member of PASOK. In 1981 she was awarded a PhD in economics from the University of Reading. She was a member of PASOK's Central Committee until 1988, and served as Deputy Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology 1986 to 1987 and as Deputy Minister of Commerce in 1988. In 1989, she was appointed as Greece's European Commissioner, taking the post of Commissioner for Employment, industrial relations and social affairs in the second Delors Commission. After her term on the commission, she returned to Greek domestic politics and was elected to the Hellenic Parliament in the 1993, 1996 and 2000 elections. The Panhellenic Socialist Movement ( el, Πανελλήνιο Σοσιαλιστικό Κίνημα, Panellínio Sosialistikó Kínima, ), known mostly by its acronym PASOK, (; , ) is a social-democratic political party in Greece. A European Commissioner is a member of the European Commission. Each Commissioner within the college holds a specific portfolio and are led by the President of the European Commission. In simple terms they are the equivalent of national ministers. Greece is a parliamentary representative democratic republic, where the President of Greece is the head of state and the Prime Minister of Greece is the head of government within a multi-party system. Giorgos Kontogeorgis ( el, Γιώργος Κοντογεώργης; 21 November 1912 – 9 November 2009) was a Greek economist who became a civil servant and politician. He played a crucial role in planning Greece's accession to the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1981, and the became Greece's first European Commissioner. Born in Tinos, Kontogeorgis studied economics at the Supreme School of Economics and Business in Athens, and took a masters degree in the United States. He joined the Greek civil service, rising to become General Director of the Ministry of Commerce, but resigned from that post when the Greek junta took power after a coup in 1967. When civilian rule was restored in 1974, the Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis appointed Kontogeorgis as Deputy Minister of Coordination and Planning.
