Grenada Railway
The Grenada Railroad (reporting mark GRYR) is a 228-mile long (290 km) shortline railroad that runs from Southaven, Mississippi to Canton, Mississippi, along the former Illinois Central Railroad trackage. The GRYR interchanges at Canton, Mississippi, with the Canadian National, and at Memphis, Tennessee with CN, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, BNSF and CSX. The main commodities the Class III railroad hauls include chemicals, flour, lumber, paper, plastics, and petroleum. The Grenada Railroad is operated by Gulf & Atlantic Railways LLC. History The line was part of Illinois Central Railroad's Grenada District and was mostly used by its premier Chicago-New Orleans passenger trains, the ''City of New Orleans'' and the ''Panama Limited'', running in the postwar period at speeds up to 100 miles per hour on some stretches. Florida Gulf & Atlantic Railroad
The Florida Gulf and Atlantic Railroad is a Class III railroad owned and operated by RailUSA in the Florida Panhandle. The line consists of 373 miles (600 km) of track running from Baldwin, Florida (just west of Jacksonville) west through Tallahassee to Pensacola. The line also has a short branch from Tallahassee north to Attapulgus, Georgia. The line connects to CSX lines in Baldwin, Pensacola, and Attapulgus. The FG&A began operation on June 1, 2019, after RailUSA acquired the line from CSX Transportation. The Jacksonville-Pensacola line was the route of the ''Gulf Wind'' streamliner from 1949 to 1971. After two decades of freight-only service, passenger service resumed in 1993 when the route of Amtrak's ''Sunset Limited'' was extended beyond New Orleans to Orlando. Casey Jones
John Luther "Casey" Jones (March 14, 1863 – April 30, 1900) was an American railroader who was killed when his passenger train collided with a stalled freight train at Vaughan, Mississippi. Jones was a locomotive engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad, based in Memphis, Tennessee, and Jackson, Mississippi. He was noted for his exceptionally punctual schedules, which sometimes required a degree of risk, though this was not a factor on his fatal last journey. However, there is some disagreement about the sequence of events on that night, April 29–30, 1900. He was due to run the southbound passenger service from Memphis to Canton, Mississippi, departing 11:35pm. Panama Limited
The ''Panama Limited'' was a passenger train operated from 1911 to 1971 between Chicago, Illinois, and New Orleans, Louisiana. The flagship train of the Illinois Central Railroad, it took its name from the Panama Canal, which in 1911 was three years from completion. For most of its career, the train was "all- Pullman", carrying sleeping cars only. The ''Panama Limited'' was one of many trains discontinued when Amtrak began operations in 1971, though Amtrak revived the name later that year and continued it until 1981.
