Greg Hall (jockey)
Greg Hall, nicknamed "The G" (born 1956 or 1957), is a retired Australian jockey who is best known for riding Subzero to victory in the 1992 Melbourne Cup. Hall also won a Cox Plate, two Golden Slippers and two Victoria Derbies riding for the likes of Lloyd Williams, Sheikh Mohammed and Kerry Packer. He rode 848 winners, including 42 Group One Group One, Group 1, Grade I or G1 is the term used for the highest level of Thoroughbred and Standardbred stakes races in many countries. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. Subzero (horse)
Subzero, nicknamed "Subbie" (26 September 1988 – 29 August 2020), was an Australian thoroughbred racehorse that won the 1992 Melbourne Cup. Life and career Subzero was foaled in Australia. Trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by veteran jockey Greg Hall, the four-year-old revelled in the rain-affected going in the 1992 Melbourne Cup to defeat the favourite, Veandercross, and the two-miler Castletown. The win was to be Subzero's last, but as one of the few grey winners of the race in the post-War era, his fame was assured. Upon retirement from racing, Subzero was employed as the clerk of the course's horse by Racing Victoria's long-time clerk, Graham Salisbury, and made numerous appearances on television, at charity functions and schools. In July 2008, he was fully retired as he had developed arthritis. 1992 Melbourne Cup
The 1992 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race which took place on Tuesday, 3 November 1992. The race was run over , at Flemington Racecourse. The Cup was won by the 4 year old gelding Subzero. Subzero was trained by Lee Freedman, his second win of five in the Cup after Tawriffic in 1989 and followed by Doriemus (1995) and Makybe Diva (2004 and 2005). It was the only win by Greg Hall in the Melbourne Cup. After the Australian bred Subzero, the next five placings were New Zealand bred horses including the runner up and race favourite Veandercross and the three time Wellington Cup winner Castletown in third. Following his retirement, Subzero was employed as the clerk of the course's horse by Graham Salisbury, Racing Victoria's long-time clerk. The W. S. Cox Plate is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years old and over under Weight for age conditions, over a distance of 2040 metres (approximately 1m 2f), that is held by the Moonee Valley Racing Club at Moonee Valley Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in late October. The Golden Slipper Stakes is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old horses run over 1,200 metres on turf at set weights conditions, held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. The Victoria Derby, also known as the Penfolds Victoria Derby, is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held under Set Weights conditions over a distance of 2,500 metres at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne, Australia scheduled annually on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Group One, Group 1, Grade I or G1 is the term used for the highest level of Thoroughbred and Standardbred stakes races in many countries. In Europe, the level of races for Thoroughbred racing is determined using the Pattern races, Pattern race system introduced in 1971 and monitored by the European Pattern Committee.
