1992 Melbourne Cup
The 1992 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race which took place on Tuesday, 3 November 1992. The race was run over , at Flemington Racecourse. The Cup was won by the 4 year old gelding Subzero. Subzero was trained by Lee Freedman, his second win of five in the Cup after Tawriffic in 1989 and followed by Doriemus (1995) and Makybe Diva (2004 and 2005). It was the only win by Greg Hall in the Melbourne Cup. After the Australian bred Subzero, the next five placings were New Zealand bred horses including the runner up and race favourite Veandercross and the three time Wellington Cup winner Castletown in third. Following his retirement, Subzero was employed as the clerk of the course's horse by Graham Salisbury, Racing Victoria's long-time clerk. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. It was originally run over but was shortened to in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. Larry Cassidy (jockey)
Larry Cassidy (born 1970) is an accomplished thoroughbred racing jockey who is notable for winning over 40 Group One, Group 1 races as well as three consecutive Sydney jockey premierships in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Cassidy's brother Jim Cassidy (jockey), Jimmy Cassidy, who is seven years older than Larry, was an established jockey in New Zealand and then Australia who won the Melbourne Cup on Kiwi (horse), Kiwi in 1983. Another brother, Ricky, was also a jockey. Cassidy also started his career in New Zealand, leaving his home aged 12 to do an apprenticeship with Brent Beattie at Palmerston North, and later Bruce Marsh at Woodville, New Zealand, Woodville. Gai Waterhouse
Gabriel Marie "Gai" Waterhouse (née Smith; born 2 September 1954) is an Australian horse trainer and businesswoman. The daughter of Tommy J. Smith, a leading trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses, Waterhouse was born and raised in Sydney. After graduating from the University of New South Wales, she worked as an actor for a time, appearing in both Australian and English television series. Having worked under her father for a period of 15 years, Waterhouse was granted an Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence in 1992, and trained her first Group One (G1) winner later that year. In 1994, after her father became ill, she took over his Tulloch Lodge stable, and she has since trained 145 G1 winners and won seven Sydney trainers' premierships. Mick Dittman
Leonard Ross "Mick" Dittman (born 2 July 1952 in Rockhampton Queensland) is a retired Australian Racing Hall of Fame jockey. Nicknamed "The Enforcer" due to his strong use of the whip, he was renowned for his vigour and strength in a tight finish. He rose to become one of the best jockeys in the country. Super Impose (5 October 1984 – 23 March 2007) was a New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. In a career spanning 74 starts, he won eight Group One races and a then Australasian record $5.6 million in prize money. Darren Gauci
Darren Gauci (born 26 December 1965, in Melbourne, Australia) is a former Australian jockey. Racing career Gauci was one of Australia's most successful and durable jockeys. He won the Senior Victorian Jockeys Premiership in 1983–84, 1985–86 and 1990–91. He came close to winning Australian racing's greatest prize on three occasions, with seconds in the Melbourne Cup on Chagemar (1984), Super Impose (1989) and on a Jeune (2005). Gauci won 35 Group 1 races. For several years, Gauci also rode with great success in Hong Kong.
