Alexandroupoli
Alexandroupolis ( el, Αλεξανδρούπολη, ), Alexandroupoli, or Alexandrople is a city in Greece and the capital of the Evros regional unit. It is the largest city in Western Thrace and the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It has 71,601 inhabitants and is an important port and commercial center of northeastern Greece. The city was first settled by the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century and grew into a fishing village, Dedeağaç. In 1873, it became a ''kaza'' and one year later, it was promoted to a ''sanjak''. Ormenio
Ormenio ( el, Ορμένιο, tr, Çirmen, bg, Черномен, Chernomen) is the northernmost place in all of Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Trigono in the Evros regional unit of Thrace. It is situated near the right bank of the river Evros, which forms the border with Bulgaria here. On the other side of the Evros, 6 km to the north, lies the Bulgarian town Svilengrad. Nearby villages in Greece are Ptelea to its southeast and Petrota to its southwest. History In 1371 Ormenio was the site of the Battle of Maritsa in which the Serb army under Ivan Uglesha and Vukashin was decisively defeated by the Ottomans. It was known as "Çirmen" during Ottoman rule and was a sanjak centre until 1829. In 1878 it was inhabited by 870 Bulgarians and 120 Muslims. Aisymi
Aisymi (Greek: Αισύμη, Bulgarian: Дуган Хисар, ''Dugan hisar'', tr, Doğanhisar) is a village in the southern part of the Evros regional unit, Greece. It is located next to the Greek National Road 53, about 20 km north of the city of Alexandroupoli. In 2011 its population was 193 for the village and 253 for the community, including the village Leptokarya. Population History Aisymi dates back to the ancient times as an ancient settlement. Like the rest of Western Thrace, it was ruled by the Ottoman Empire since the 14th century. It remained under Ottoman rule until the Balkan Wars of 1913. At that time, Aisymi (then known as ''Doğanhisar'', ''Dugan Hisar'' in Bulgarian) was a Bulgarian speaking village like many parts of today's Evros prefecture. Mikro Dereio
Mikro Dereio ( el, Μικρό Δέρειο) is a village and a community in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. It is situated on the left bank of the river Erythropotamos, in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The border with Bulgaria is 5 km to the north. Mikro Dereio is on the Greek National Road 53. In 2011 its population was 158 for the settlement and 1,903 for the community, making it the most populous community of the municipal unit of Orfeas. The community consists of the villages Mikro Dereio, Geriko, Goniko, Mega Dereio, Petrolofos, Roussa and Sidirochori. Metaxades
Metaxades ( el, Μεταξάδες, ) is a large village and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Didymoteicho, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 211.238 km2. In 2011 its population was 687 for the village, 717 for the community and 3,415 for the municipality. It's a settlement where the popular form of the most characteristic industrial buildings of Thrace was created. These buildings are the koukoulospita (cocoon houses) made for housing families and hosting sericulture as a homemade activity. Kyprinos
Kyprinos ( el, Κυπρίνος) is a town and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Orestiada, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 135.976 km2. In 2011 its population was 806 for the village and 2,226 for the municipal unit. Kyprinos is located southwest of Edirne, Turkey, west-northwest of Orestiada, north of Alexandroupoli and about 5 to 6 km east of Kurdzhali and the Bulgarian frontier, where there is a border crossing.
