Greek Ice Hockey Championship
The Greek Ice hockey Championship ( el, Ελληνικό Πρωτάθλημα Χόκεϊ επί Πάγου) is the only level of ice hockey in Greece. It is operated under the jurisdiction of the Hellenic Ice Sports Federation, an associate member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. There are currently registered 100 players. History Hockey was played no later than from the beginning of the 20th century by Greeks in America, even the modern Greek words for ice hockey ("hockey epi pagou") and skates ("pagopedila") are from an older form of the language, as spoken in the first half of the 20th century. It took until 1984, when ice hockey started in Greece in 1984 by players that returned to Greece from abroad. Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. In ice hockey, two opposing teams use ice hockey sticks to control, advance and shoot a closed, vulcanized, rubber disc called a " puck" into the other team's goal. Each goal is worth one point. Aris Thessaloniki Ice Hockey Club
Aris Thessaloniki Ice Hockey Club is an ice hockey team in Thessaloniki, Greece. They play in the Greek Ice Hockey Championship. They were founded in 1985 and initially known as ''Thessaloniki Penguins''. History The team was founded in 1985 as ''Thessaloniki Penguins''. In 1989, they joined the Aris Thessaloniki sports club and being known as the ''Aris Thessaloniki Penguins'', they managed to win the first 3 Greek Ice Hockey Championships held, the inaugural Greek championship in 1989, and continued their dominance, winning the 1990 and 1991 Greek championships. They also participated in the 1990–91 IIHF European Cup. They finished in last place in Group A, losing 26–1 to Levski-Spartak Sofia, and 30–0 to HC Steaua Bucuresti. Krugersdorp
Krugersdorp (Afrikaans for ''Kruger's Town'') is a mining city in the West Rand, Gauteng Province, South Africa founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius. Following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand, a need arose for a major town in the west of the reef. The government bought part of the Paardekraal farm and named the new town after the Transvaal president, Paul Kruger. 1995 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships
The 1995 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships was the 59th such event sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Teams representing 39 countries participated in several levels of competition. The competition also served as qualifications for group placements in the 1996 competition. The top Championship Group tournament took place in Sweden from 23 April to 7 May 1995, with games played in Stockholm and Gävle. In the tournament final, Finland won the gold medal by defeating Sweden 4–1 at the Globen arena in Stockholm. The Finnish goals were scored by Timo Jutila and Ville Peltonen, who scored a hat trick. The gold medal was the first in Finland's history. Sweden had written a fight song, "Den glider in", which also was intended to be the official song of the championships. The Ice Hockey World Championships are an annual international men's ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). First officially held at the 1920 Summer Olympics, it is the sport's highest profile annual international tournament. The IIHF was created in 1908 while the European Championships, the precursor to the World Championships, were first held in 1910. The 1992 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships was the 56th such event sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Teams representing a record 32 countries participated in several levels of competition. The competition also served as qualifications for group placements in the 1993 competition. The top Championship Group A tournament took place in Czechoslovakia from 28 April to 10 May 1992, with games played in Prague and Bratislava. This would be the last championship held in that nation before the dissolution of Czechoslovakia eight months later.
