Great Britain Women's National Wheelchair Basketball Team
The Great Britain women's national wheelchair basketball team is the women's wheelchair basketball team that represents Great Britain in international competitions. It is governed by the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association. History In 2018, Great Britain won silver at the 2018 World Championships in Hamburg. At the 2019 Women’s Wheelchair Basketball European Championships in Rotterdam, Great Britain secured qualification to the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo. Going into the tournament, Great Britain were the reigning Worlds silver medalists as well as the third-place team in six consecutive European Championships. Great Britain lost 65-52 to the Netherlands in a rematch of the 2018 World Championships gold medal game. British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB), formerly named the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association, is a non-profit organisation and the governing body for wheelchair basketball in Great Britain. The organisation represents Great Britain in the IWBF and the women's and the men's national wheelchair basketball team in the British Paralympic Association. The organisation is responsible for the selection and training of the team that represent Great Britain in international tournaments, including the World Championships and Games of the Paralympiad and the qualifiers therefore, as well as for the promotion of the sport amongst prospective players, spectators, and fans. Wheelchair basketball is basketball played by people with varying physical disabilities that disqualify them from playing a non-disabled sport. These include spina bifida, birth defects, cerebral palsy, paralysis due to accident, amputations (of the legs, or other parts), and many other disabilities. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) is the governing body for this sport. It is recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the sole competent authority in wheelchair basketball worldwide. FIBA has recognized IWBF under Article 53 of its General Statutes. The IWBF has 95 National Organizations for Wheelchair Basketball (NOWBs) participating in wheelchair basketball throughout the world, with this number increasing each year. The ''Wakefield Express'' is the newspaper serving the City of Wakefield district in West Yorkshire, England.
