Great Britain At The 1984 Summer Paralympics
Great Britain was the co-host of the 1984 Summer Paralympics in Stoke Mandeville, United Kingdom and New York City, United States. It was represented by 227 athletes competing in archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, equestrian, football, lawn bowls, powerlifting, shooting, snooker, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair fencing. It finished second in the overall medal count, with a total of 331 medals. By hosting the Games in Stoke Mandeville, Britain was returning them to their roots. Eric Pearce (athlete)
Eric Pearce (1936–1997) was an English Paralympic athlete, who represented Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Paralympics. Biography Pearce was born in Nottingham. After leaving school, he went to work at Gedling Colliery before joining the RAF. Eric spent 12 years in the RAF during which he was stationed in Cypress, Singapore, Darlington and the Isle of Man. After leaving the RAF he returned to work at Gedling Colliery. During this time, he was involved in an accident whereby a roof collapsed on him, injuring his back and leaving him hospitalised for several months. He was unable to work again because he had trouble walking and was forced to use a wheelchair. After the incident, he began helping disabled children with sports. He also started to train himself to have something to focus on. Eventually, he was offered a place on the team to represent Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Paralympics in New York City. John Harris (athlete)
John Harris (born 1945) is a former Paralympic athlete from Wales competing mainly in category 5 throwing events. In 1984 he became the world record holder in the discus winning gold at the Summer Paralympics, following this with silver in the discus and bronze in the Pentathlon four years later. Career history Harris was born in Sebastopol, Torfaen, a suburb of Pontypool in south Wales. A keen athlete as a youth, Harris was involved in gymnastics, rugby union and boxing. At the age of 18, Harris was on holiday at a Butlins holiday camp when he fell 18 metres from a big wheel resulting in the paralysis of his legs. The injury left him hospital for five months, and after his release he "wasted the next three years in the pub". Harris' involvement in parasports began when a friend persuaded him to attend a gym in an attempt to improve his fitness and give him focus. Tony Griffin (athlete)
Anthony Griffin (born February 1960) is a British paralympic athlete who was convicted, in 2023, of conspiracy to supply drugs. Paralympic career Griffin, who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy won 38 Paralympic medals. He also performed in the opening ceremony of the year 2012 Olympic Games. After his sporting career, he spoke in schools about his inspirational journey as a disabled athlete. He attributes his successes to his mother. Gary Gardner (born 29 June 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder for EFL League One side Cambridge United. James Brown is a former Northern Irish paralympic-cyclist, who competed for Great Britain, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. He is visually impaired and participated in five Paralympic Games in various sports. Brown earned two gold medals at the 1984 Summer Paralympics in athletics and a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in the men's road time trial with sighted pilot Damien Shaw.
