Granby Street, Leicester
Granby Street is a street in the city centre of Leicester, England. It stretches from the intersection of Gallowtree Gate, Horsefair Street and Helford Street to St Georges Way. The street contains small shops, offices, financial services, restaurants, pubs and fast food outlets. The street houses Leicester City Council and the Grand Hotel, built in 1898, the Turkey Cafe, and was once home to a temperance hall. From 1901 to 1949, electric lines of two-track trams ran along Granby Street towards the Clock Tower and the train station towards Stoneygate Stoneygate is part of the City of Leicester, England. Leicester City Council is a unitary authority responsible for local government in the city of Leicester, England. Grand Hotel (Leicester)
The Grand Hotel is a Grade II listed large hotel on Granby Street in the City centre of Leicester, England. It is now known as the Mercure Leicester City Hotel. It was designed by Cecil Ogden and built between 1897-98 by Amos Hall. The wedding-cake style top on the corner of Grandby Street and Belvoir Street was added by Amos Hall who also designed the Silver Arcade in the Edwardian period. The Kings Hall on the first floor was at one time a cinema. The hotel has always been considered one of Leicester's most prestigious, but arguably its heyday was during Victorian times. Turkey Cafe
The Turkey Cafe is a building with a flamboyant Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style) facade in Granby Street, Leicester, England. It was built in 1900 and is now a Grade II listed building, once again used as a café. The facade puns on two meanings of "turkey", with a vaguely Eastern exotic style of architecture and three large turkey birds on the facade, one sculpted on each side of the ground floor shopfront and another forming a large coloured panel of Royal Doulton tiles right at the top. History The site of the Turkey Cafe was owned by James Wesley, a grocer and confectioner, from 1877 to 1899. Wesley sold the site to architect Arthur Wakerley, a well-known Leicester architect who was also a prominent supporter of the Temperance Movement. Stoneygate
Stoneygate is part of the City of Leicester, England. Situated on the south-east side of the city some two miles from the centre, Stoneygate is a mainly residential suburb characterised by its large Victorian houses. It straddles the London Road which connects Leicester with the town of Market Harborough and was formerly the main route for horse-drawn carriages between Leicester and London. It gives its name to Stoneygate ward, which also includes parts of Evington Valley and Highfields, whilst the south-eastern parts of Stoneygate are counted in the Knighton ward of Leicester City Council.
