Graham Moore (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir Graham Moore, (1764–1843) was a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer he took part in the Great Siege of Gibraltar during the American Revolutionary War. As captain of the frigate , he took part in the Battle of Tory Island in October 1798, capturing the two days later, during the French Revolutionary Wars. He went on to be First Naval Lord, then Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet, and finally, Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth. He was the younger brother of General Sir John Moore. Naval career Moore was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Jean Simson and John Moore, doctor and author. He entered the Navy in 1777 at the age of 13. Niaqunnguut (Inuktitut syllabics: ''ᓂᐊᖁᙴᑦ'' formerly Cape Graham Moore, after Vice-Admiral Sir Graham Moore, is an uninhabited headland on Bylot Island in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. It is located at the island's southeastern tip protruding into Lancaster Sound. The community of Pond Inlet is to the southwest. Geography The habitat is characterized by rocky shores and coastal cliffs that reach an elevation of above sea level. Conservation The cape is a Canadian Important Bird Area (#NU068), an International Biological Program site (#7-5), Key Marine Habitat site (#15), and Key Migratory Bird Terrestrial Habitat site. Other IBAs on the island include Cape Hay and Southwest Bylot Plain. The cape is part of the Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Niiwalarra, formerly known as Sir Graham Moore Island, is located off the Kimberley coast of Western Australia. The island encompasses an area of . It is situated within the Sir Graham Moore Islands group, about north of Kalumburu. The Juarinanda people were recorded as early inhabitants of the island, but they were decimated by disease in the 19th century, with the remainder of the population moving to Drysdale River Mission. Wunambal, Gaambera and Kwini people made journeys to islands in the area by dugout canoes originally bought from Makassan traders, who began visiting the Kimblerley coast sometime between 1669 and 1763. Both Aboriginal and Makassan peoples harvested and processed sea cucumber. The Juarinanda incorporated several Malay words into their language. Graham Moore (7 March 1941 – 9 February 2016) was a Welsh former footballer. During a 16-year playing career, he made over 400 appearances in The Football League, scoring 61 goals, and attained 21 caps for Wales. Early life Moore was born in Hengoed and attended Gilfach Primary and Bargoed Secondary schools. After leaving school he began working alongside his father and brother at Penallta Colliery. Club career In 1956, Moore joined Bargoed YMCA, where he spent one year playing for the club's under-16 side before he was spotted by Cardiff City, joining the club along with teammates Tommy Mills and Graham Franklin. After playing for a year in the reserve side, he made his debut for the club at 17, scoring a last-minute equaliser in a 2–2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in September 1958. Professor Graham Moore is a British scientist, an internationally recognised researcher and Director of the John Innes Centre, Norwich. Most of his research has focused on understanding cereal genetics. Professor Moore developed the pioneering concept of cereal ‘Synteny’, for which he was awarded the Royal Society Darwin Medal in 1998. His research provides an understanding of the control of pairing and crossover between related chromosomes in wheat and enables genes from wild relatives to be incorporated into the wheat genome. His research aims to understand the genes involved in the temperature sensitivity of meiosis. In 2021 Professor Moore's research group characterised the gene, ZIP4, which has profound effects on the production of seeds in wheat.
