Governor's Bridge (Patuxent River)
Governor's Bridge is an historic single-lane bridge over the Patuxent River near Bowie, Maryland. The river marks the boundary between Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties. A bridge has been located on this site since the mid-18th century. Although a common bridge type, the current Governor's Bridge is one of only two surviving truss bridges in Prince George's County. History Three bridges have stood on this site. The first bridge was constructed by Governor Samuel Ogle to travel between his mansion in Collington and the state capital in Annapolis. By 1817, the first bridge had been damaged beyond repair or destroyed and a ford was being used to traverse the river at the site. On February 4, 1817, the State of Maryland commissioned Joseph N. Patuxent River
The Patuxent River is a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay in the state of Maryland. There are three main river drainages for central Maryland: the Potomac River to the west passing through Washington, D.C., the Patapsco River to the northeast passing through Baltimore, and the Patuxent River between the two. The Patuxent watershed had a rapidly growing population of 590,769 in 2000. It is the largest and longest river entirely within Maryland, and its watershed is the largest completely within the state. Geography The river source, from the Chesapeake, is in the hills of the Maryland Piedmont near the intersection of four counties – Howard, Frederick, Montgomery and Carroll, and only from Parr's Spring, the source of the south fork of the Patapsco River. Joseph Noble Stockett
Joseph Noble Stockett was prominent Maryland landowner during the late 18th and early 19th century. Career Stockett was a staunch Federalism in the United States, Federalist who studied medicine but never practiced. He was a member of the Whig Party (United States), Whig Party. He inherited the family home known as Obligation (Harwood, Maryland), Obligation in Harwood, Maryland and expanded it to its current size. On February 4, 1817, the State of Maryland commissioned Stockett and James Sanders, both of Anne Arundel County, to build a Governor's Bridge (Patuxent River), new bridge over the Patuxent River.
