After the creation of the ''Warhammer Fantasy'' universe by Games Workshop, novels were published by GW Books and Boxtree Limited, but subsequently novels have been published by the Black Library, including translations to French and German. More than 150 novels were set in the shared universe of ''Warhammer Fantasy'' between 1989 and 2015. According to Marc Gascoigne the idea of Chaos in ''Warhammer'' was inspired by ''The Eternal Champion'' and its sequels, written by Michael Moorcock, who made use of ideas from ''Three Hearts and Three Lions'' by Poul Anderson. The ''Warhammer'' elves were inspired by '' The Broken Sword'' by Poul Anderson as well the Middle-earth canon of J. R. R. Tolkien. Alexander Michael Stewart (born 25 July 1958) is a British writer. His best known work is fiction written under the pseudonym Sandy Mitchell—Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 novels, including the Ciaphas Cain series. A full-time writer since the mid-1980s, the majority of his work (as Sandy Mitchell) has been tie-in fiction for Games Workshop's Warhammer fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 science fiction lines, as well as a novelisation of episodes from the high tech thriller series Bugs, for which he also worked as a scriptwriter under his real name. James Wallis is a British designer and publisher of tabletop and role-playing games. He is not to be confused with Myriador's Jamie Wallis, who converted ''Steve Jackson's Sorcery!'' into d20 modules. The David Gemmell Awards for Fantasy, established in memory of David Gemmell, were awarded from 2009 to 2018. In 2009, only the Legend Award for best fantasy novel was awarded.
