Goshen, Missouri
Goshen is an unincorporated community in Mercer County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. History Goshen was originally called McKinneysville, and under the latter name was platted in 1860. A post office called Goshen was established in 1854, and remained in operation until 1904. Mercer County, Missouri
Mercer County is a county located in the northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,538. making it the second-least populous county in Missouri. Its county seat is Princeton. The county was organized February 14, 1845 and named for General John F. Mercer of the Revolutionary War. History Early years Mercer County was organized February 14, 1845, from part of Grundy County. It is named in honor of General Hugh Mercer, who fought and died in the American Revolutionary War. The first permanent settlements in what is now Mercer County were in 1837, when a few families from other parts of Missouri moved to the area. The land of Goshen ( he, אֶרֶץ גֹּשֶׁן, Modern: ''ʾEreẓ Gōšen'', Tiberian: ''ʾEreṣ Gōšen'') is named in the Hebrew Bible as the place in Egypt given to the Hebrews by the pharaoh of Joseph (Book of Genesis, ), and the land from which they later left Egypt at the time of the Exodus. It is believed to have been located in the eastern Nile Delta, lower Egypt; perhaps at or near Avaris, the seat of power of the Hyksos kings. Meaning of the name If the Septuagint reading "Gesem" is correct, the word, which in its Hebrew form has no known meaning, may mean "cultivated"—comparing the Arabic root ''j-š-m'', "to labor". Egyptologists have suggested a connection with the Egyptian word ''qis'', meaning "inundated land".
