Alan Gorrie
Alan Edward Gorrie (born 19 July 1946 in Perth) is a Scottish bassist, guitarist, keyboardist and singer. He is a founding member of the Average White Band and remains one of two original members in the group's current line-up (Onnie McIntyre being the other). History Having previously played in Forever More, Gorrie and Owen "Onnie" McIntyre formed the Average White Band in London in 1971. They became a successful funk/ R&B group, topping record charts internationally with the '' AWB'' album and " Pick Up the Pieces" single. Dave Gorrie
Dave Gorrie (October 15, 1930 – May 16, 2015) was a college baseball coach. He served as the head coach at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1960 to 1977 and at Pepperdine University from 1979 to 1988. He coached the Pepperdine Wave to the 1979 College World Series, where they placed third. Gorrie finished his career as a private hitting instructor and a volunteer hitting coach at Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas. Playing career In the 1951, Dave and his brothers, Dick and Doug all played in the backfield of Santa Barbara College (the name of UC-Santa Barbara prior to 1958). Dave was fullback, Dick was quarterback and Doug was halfback. Gorrie then went on to play running back in the Armed Forces. He was signed to the Kansas City Athletic's farm system to play baseball in 1956. Donald Gorrie
Donald Cameron Easterbrook Gorrie OBE (2 April 1933 – 25 August 2012) was a Scottish Liberal Democrat politician. He was a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Central Scotland region from 1999 to 2007. He also sat in the British House of Commons from 1997 to 2001 as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Edinburgh West. Personal life Gorrie was educated at the independent Oundle School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he read classics and modern history. A former athlete, he held the Scottish record for the 880 yards in his youth. He won the 880 yards and mile run at the 1957 Canadian Track and Field Championships. He was married to Astrid and had two sons and a number of grandchildren. His son Robert Gorrie was a Liberal Democrat councillor in Haringey, London, 2006–2014 and was Leader of the Opposition 2008–2011. Veronica Gorrie (sometimes referred to as Heritage-Gorrie, born 1971/1972) is an Aboriginal Australian writer. She is a Krauatungalang Gunai woman. Her first book, ''Black and Blue: A memoir of racism and resilience'', a memoir reflecting on her Aboriginality and the decade she spent in the police force, was released in 2021. ''Black and Blue'' won Australia's richest literary award, the Victorian Prize for Literature, in 2022. Personal life Gorrie was born in 1971 or 1972, daughter of John (a Gunai man of the Krauatungalang clan) and Heather (a white first-generation Australian). Charles Gorrie Wynne FRS (18 May 1911–1 October 1999) was an English optics designer, a significant figure in optical lens design. He was born in Leicester and educated at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys and Exeter College, Oxford, where his studies were interrupted by tuberculosis. He started work at a local lens manufacturing company, Taylor, Taylor and Hobson of Leicester. In 1943 he moved to work at Wray (Optical Works) in Kent, where he worked until 1960, designing a wide range of significant optical systems. In 1960 he joined the Technical Optics Section at Imperial College, London as director of the Optical Design Group, a position he held until 1978. Whilst there he and several colleagues formed the company IC Optical Systems to manufacture specialist scientific optical instruments, which eventually moved out of the university to become an independent company. Gorrie Airfield
__NOTOC__ Gorrie Airfield was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) airfield in the Northern Territory of Australia during World War II located about north of Larrimah and about south of Mataranka in what is now the locality of Elsey. The airfield was named after Flying Officer Peter Gorrie who was killed in action on 12 January 1942 during an attack against enemy shipping at Menado. The establishment at Gorrie comprised over 6,000 RAAF personnel responsible for aircraft and vehicle maintenance for the RAAF and United States Army Air Forces. A large petrol storage and bomb dump were constructed as part of the airfield. The remains of the runway and many of the buildings and structures are still visible. Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre is a high security Remand Centre for males, primarily accommodating individuals who a Judge or Magistrate has ordered must be held in custody as they await, and during, trial.
