Eric Gore-Browne
Eric Antony Rollo Gore-Browne (13 June 1890 – 3 July 1918) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer who was killed in action in the First World War. Early life and education Gore-Browne was the son of the Rev. Robert Melvill Gore-Brown (son of Rt. Rev. Harold Browne) and his wife Hon. Agnes Catharine Rollo, daughter of John, 10th Lord Rollo. He was born at Ryde on the Isle of Wight in June 1890. He was educated firstly in Hampshire at Twyford School and Eastam's School at Southsea. From there he attended Oundle School in Northamptonshire. After completing his education, Gore-Browne decided on a career in the British Army and attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Harold Gore Browne
Colonel Harold Gore Brown (18 September 1856 - 4 January 1938) commanded the First Battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps in the Boer War of 1899–1900, and took part in the Relief of Ladysmith. He was a member of the King's Bodyguard from 1905 until 1928 as one of H.M. Honourable Corp of Gentlemen-at-Arms. Gore Brown was the Honorary Secretary of the Fair Trade League. Family Harold was the son of Thomas Gore Browne, brother to Ethel Locke King and Wilfrid Gore Browne. He was married to Lady Muriel Murray, daughter of Charles Murray, 7th Earl of Dunmore. Colonel Henry George Gore-Browne (30 September 1830 – 15 November 1912) was born in Newtown, County Roscommon and was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Family Henry George was the son of Arthur Browne, Esq. (d.1870), and his wife Anna Elizabeth Clements, daughter of Captain Clements. Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces and may be awarded posthumously. It was previously awarded by countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, most of which have established their own honours systems and no longer recommend British honours. It may be awarded to a person of any military rank in any service and to civilians under military command. No civilian has received the award since 1879. Lieutenant Colonel Sir Stewart Gore-Browne (3 May 1883 – 4 August 1967), called Chipembele by Zambians, was a soldier, pioneer white settler, builder, politician and supporter of independence in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). Early life Gore-Browne was born in London, England. His father was Francis Gore Browne, a lawyer and writer on company law, his paternal grandfather was Sir Thomas Gore Browne, who had been governor of New Zealand and Tasmania. His paternal aunt was Ethel Locke King. Gore-Browne was educated at Wixenford Preparatory School for five years and Harrow School for a further three. Colonel Sir Thomas Robert Gore Browne, (3 July 1807 – 17 April 1887) was a British colonial administrator, who was Governor of St Helena, Governor of New Zealand, Governor of Tasmania and Governor of Bermuda. Wilfrid Gore Browne (6 May 1859 – 15 March 1928) was an Anglican bishop, the first Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman from 1912 to 1928. He was described as a saintly bishop with "a keen sense of humour" and "a winning courtesy." General Gore Browne (c. 1764 – 12 January 1843) was a British Army officer who became Lieutenant-Governor of Plymouth. Military career Browne was commissioned as an ensign in the 35th Regiment of Foot on 5 July 1780. He became commanding officer of the 40th Regiment of Foot and commanded it at the Battle of Krabbendam and the Battle of Bergen in September 1799 and the Battle of Alkmaar in October 1799 during the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland.
