Gordon Beverly Walker (March 22, 1891 – July 5, 1954) was a United Farmers of Alberta member of the Legislative Assembly for the years from 1926 to 1935. At the general election in 1926 in the riding of Claresholm he defeated incumbent Thomas Milnes, Independent. Again elected in 1930 representing the riding of Nanton-Claresholm. Defeated in 1935 by Harry Haslam, Social Credit. Claresholm is a town located within southern Alberta, Canada. It is located on Highway 2, approximately northwest of the City of Lethbridge and south of the City of Calgary. One of the Famous Five involved in the Persons Case, Louise McKinney, lived in Claresholm and was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the area in the 1917 provincial election. History The location was originally a watering stop for steam engines on the Canadian Pacific Railway line along the Macleod Trail when the trains first arrived in the area in 1891. The first settlers arrived in 1902, and the village was established in 1903. Claresholm was incorporated as a town in 1905, the year Alberta became a province. Claresholm was a provincial electoral district in Alberta mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1909 to 1929. History The Claresholm electoral district was formed prior to the 1909 Alberta general election from the northern portion of the Macleod electoral district. The electoral district would be renamed Nanton-Claresholm prior to the 1930 Alberta general election. Malcolm McKenzie was elected the first MLA for Claresholm in the 1909 election, McKenzie was the incumbent, having been elected to the Macleod electoral district in 1905. Thomas Milnes
Thomas Charles Milnes (March 11, 1870 – April 30, 1954) was a Canadian provincial politician from Alberta. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1921 to 1925 sitting as an Independent and as Mayor of Claresholm from 1910 to 1911. Early life Thomas Charles Milnes was born March 11, 1870, in Columbus, Indiana, to Thomas Milnes and Lousia Milnes. Milnes was educated in Columbus and married Emma McCleary on June 8, 1898, and together had four children. He moved to Canada later in 1905 to become a farmer and rancher. Milnes constructed a two-storey Edwardian Commercial building in Claresholm known as Milnes Block in 1910. The building was designated a Provincial Historic Resource by the Government of Alberta on May 30, 2002. Political career Milnes was elected Mayor of Claresholm, Alberta from 1910 to 1911. Alberta Social Credit was a provincial political party in Alberta, Canada, that was founded on social credit monetary policy put forward by Clifford Hugh Douglas and on conservative Christian social values.
