Goorambat is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Rural City of Benalla local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Goorambat and the surrounding area had a population of 297. History The Post Office opened on 17 March 1879 and the office named Goorambat Railway Station opened in 1883. Goorambat was later renamed Goorambat East and around 1909 Goorambat Railway Station was renamed to Goorambat. Queen Elizabeth II visited Goorambat in 1954 as part of her Victorian Tour and she stayed over in her royal carriage for one night. The Mechanics Institute hall, commonly known as the Goorambat Hall, opened on 18 September 1888 and is still in use currently. The electoral district of Euroa is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in the redistribution of electoral boundaries in 2013. It was a new district created due to the abolition of the districts of Seymour, Rodney and Benalla, taking in the areas to the north of these districts toward Shepparton. It includes the towns of Benalla, Violet Town, Euroa, Seymour, Heathcote, Nagambie, Rushworth and other towns in the Campaspe, Strathbogie, Benalla and Mitchell local government areas. The Division of Indi (pronounced ) is an Australian electoral division in the state of Victoria. The division is located in the north-east of the state, adjoining the border with New South Wales. The largest settlements in the division are the regional cities of Wodonga, Wangaratta, and Benalla. Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. At the the population was 10,822. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". Devenish is a town in northern Victoria, Australia within the Rural City of Benalla local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Devenish and the surrounding area had a population of 360, declining to 197 by 2016. History The Post Office opened on 9 June 1877 as Broken Creek and was renamed Devenish in 1878. In 1883 on the arrival of the railway, the office was moved and named Devenish Railway Station, reverting to Devenish in about 1889 as the township developed. An earlier office dating from 1870, Major Plains, was known as Devenish from 1874 until 1878. The Devenish concrete grain silos were built between the railway line and the main street and opened to receive wheat in December 1943. Later the Bulk Oat storage building was built in 1965. The Rural City of Benalla is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 14,024. It includes the towns of Baddaginnie, Benalla, Devenish, Goorambat, Major Plains, Swanpool, Tatong, Thoona, Warrenbayne and Winton. It was formed in 2002 from the de-amalgamation of the Shire of Delatite into the current rural city and the Shire of Mansfield, the former being a merger between the latter, the Shire of Benalla and the City of Benalla. Oaklands Railway Line, Victoria
The Oaklands railway line is a freight-only railway line in north-eastern Victoria, Australia. The line branches from the main North East railway at Benalla station and runs across the Victoria-New South Wales border to the town of Oaklands, New South Wales. History The first section of line opened in 1883 as a branch line to St James, at the same time as the extension of the main line to Albury in New South Wales.
